Chapter 8 - THE SIGNATURE TRAP

The document stated that Brooke had independently managed several foundation accounts.
It claimed she had authorized outside consultants without Connor’s knowledge.
It also required her to repay a fraction of the missing money in exchange for the Ashfords declining to pursue criminal charges.
The language was carefully designed.
If Brooke signed, she would confess to fraud.
Connor would appear to be the generous husband who had protected his pregnant ex-wife.
Brooke turned to the next page.
It contained the paternity clause.
Connor would not acknowledge the baby unless Brooke signed the confession.
Her hands became cold.
“You’re using our child to force me to take responsibility for your crimes.”
Connor’s jaw tightened.
“Lower your voice.”
“Did you authorize those payments?”
“Sign the papers.”
Vanessa leaned across the table.
“No one wants a scandal, Brooke.”
Brooke looked at her.
“You accessed my foundation account.”
Vanessa’s smile flickered.
Evelyn placed one manicured hand on the confession.
“You were given a place in this family. You failed to appreciate it.”
“You forged my signature.”
“Be careful,” Evelyn warned. “Poor women do not survive legal fights against families like ours.”
Brooke felt the final condition of Protocol Seven settle into place.
Coercion.
A fraudulent signature.
An immediate threat against her and her child.
Still, she gave Connor one last opportunity.
“Tell the truth,” she said quietly. “Right now.”
Connor laughed.
“You think anyone in this room will believe you?”
He raised his voice so the nearest tables could hear.
“My ex-wife is having another emotional episode.”
Guests turned.
Vanessa covered her mouth as though embarrassed for Brooke.
Evelyn stood.
“You arrive here in a cheap dress, carrying a child you expect us to finance, and then accuse this family of stealing?”
Brooke remained seated.
“I said I would not sign.”
Evelyn’s face hardened.
She picked up the metal bucket Mia had left beside the service door.
Several guests began recording.
Connor saw what his mother intended.
He could have stopped her.
Instead, he stepped aside.
Evelyn tipped the bucket.
Dirty water crashed over Brooke’s head.
The smell of bleach and old wine filled her lungs.
“At least you finally took a bath.”
The room laughed.
Vanessa lifted her glass.
“Someone get her an old towel.”
Brooke’s daughter kicked hard.
The humiliation disappeared beneath a colder emotion.
Clarity.
Brooke reached into her purse.
Connor’s smile faded when he saw her phone.
“What are you doing?”
She selected Lawrence’s number.
“Execute Protocol Seven.”
Across the ballroom, Daniel Ruiz touched his earpiece.
Brooke watched as his posture changed.
The Ashfords had finally given her everything she needed.
