Chapter 8 - THE DINNER TRAP

Lily slipped behind the greenhouse workbench seconds before the door opened.
Julian entered first.
Richard followed with a flashlight.
“She was asking Grace questions,” Julian said.
“Grace knows nothing.”
“She knew enough to photograph the invoice.”
Richard swept the flashlight across the room.
Lily held her breath.
Her heart began beating too fast.
She pressed one hand against her chest, terrified they would hear her struggling for air.
Julian walked within three feet of her hiding place.
“What happens if Lily reaches the lawyer?”
Richard’s answer came without hesitation.
“Then we make sure no one believes she is capable of managing her own affairs.”
Lily felt colder than the greenhouse floor beneath her knees.
They were not only stealing from her.
They planned to take her legal independence.
Richard explained that he had arranged a family dinner for the following evening.
A physician he knew would attend.
They would pressure Lily to sign a temporary power of attorney.
If she refused, they would use her illness and “confusion” to seek an emergency conservatorship.
“She isn’t confused,” Julian said.
“She doesn’t need to be. She only needs to look fragile in front of the right people.”
They left without finding her.
Lily remained hidden until the mansion lights went dark.
The next evening, six relatives gathered around the dining table.
Richard served Nora’s favorite meal.
He spoke gently.
Too gently.
Halfway through dinner, he announced that Lily’s condition had affected her judgment.
Julian lowered his eyes dramatically.
An unfamiliar doctor placed legal forms beside Lily’s plate.
“This allows your father to handle financial matters while you recover,” he said.
Lily picked up the papers.
The document gave Richard authority over her trust, property, company interests, and medical decisions.
She tore it in half.
The room went silent.
Richard’s smile disappeared.
Lily rose from the table.
“If anyone tries to declare me incompetent, my real doctors will testify.”
Julian slammed his glass down.
“You think a dying woman controls this family?”
Lily looked at him.
May you like
“No. But neither does a gambler.”
👉 Humiliated in front of the family, Julian decided persuasion was no longer enough.
