Chapter 17 - THE WOMAN THEY CALLED WEAK
The guardianship hearing became a criminal evidence hearing within minutes.
Richard entered the courtroom wearing a gray suit.
He looked toward Lily’s empty seat and smiled.
His attorney told the judge Lily was too medically unstable to appear.
Then the courtroom screen turned on.
Lily appeared by video from her hospital room.
She wore no makeup.
Bruises remained visible around her throat.
Her voice was steady.
“My body is ill,” she said. “My mind is not.”
Dr. Shah testified first.
She confirmed that Lily fully understood her health, finances, and legal decisions.
She also told the court that delaying surgery could have killed her.
The physician who attended Richard’s family dinner admitted he had never examined Lily.
Richard had offered him a paid consulting position in exchange for supporting the petition.
Then prosecutors played the recordings.
Richard demanding the transfer.
Richard threatening to withhold medication.
Richard describing Lily as “fragile enough to convince a judge.”
Finally, his voice filled the courtroom.

Richard’s attorney argued that the statement had been made during an emotional family dispute.
Lily asked permission to speak.
The judge allowed it.
“My father did not lose control for one moment,” Lily said. “He spent weeks changing locks, hiding medication, forging documents, and removing anyone who might help me. That was not an accident. It was a plan.”
Richard stood suddenly.
“You would have nothing without me!”
The courtroom went silent.
Lily looked directly at him through the screen.
“I had a mother who protected me, an aunt who tried to reach me, a friend you threw out, and a lawyer you could not frighten.”
She paused.
“You made sure I believed I had only you.”
The judge denied the guardianship petition permanently.
A protective order was issued.
Richard was remanded without bail on aggravated assault, coercion, financial exploitation, forgery, and corporate fraud charges.
As officers led him away, he looked toward Julian.
“Tell them she planned this!”
Julian remained seated.
