Chapter 15 - THE EMPIRE THAT NEVER BELONGED TO HIM

Evelyn returned to Lily’s hospital room carrying Nora’s blue folder.

Claire stood by the window.

Dr. Shah had warned them to keep the conversation calm.

Nothing about Evelyn’s expression looked calm.

“Your father has spent eight years telling everyone Hartwell Medical Supply belongs to him,” Evelyn said.

Lily nodded.

“He runs the company.”

“He manages it.”

Evelyn opened the folder.

“He does not own it.”

Nora’s will had divided the company carefully.

Richard owned twenty-eight percent.

Julian owned twenty percent.

The remaining fifty-two percent belonged to Lily through a protected family trust.

Until Lily turned thirty, Richard had limited management authority.

But the trust contained an emergency clause.

If Richard committed fraud, coerced Lily, interfered with her medical care, or attempted to have her declared incompetent for financial gain, his authority ended immediately.

The voting rights would transfer to Lily.

“The recording activated the clause,” Evelyn said.

Lily stared at her.

“I own the controlling share?”

“Yes.”

Richard had known the clause existed but believed the sealed evidence had disappeared with Nora.

The annual corporate audit was scheduled in one week.

Richard had used Lily’s forged signature because any payment authorized in her name would appear to come from the majority shareholder.

If he could replace the stolen $386,000 with her surgery fund, he planned to hide the most recent fraud before the auditors arrived.

“He wasn’t only saving Julian,” Lily said.

“No,” Evelyn replied. “He was saving himself.”

Evelyn had already notified the board.

Richard was removed as chief executive that morning.

His office access was terminated.

His accounts were frozen.

The guardianship petition was suspended after Dr. Shah and two specialists certified Lily’s full mental capacity.

For the first time in years, Richard controlled nothing.

Then Evelyn received a call from the county jail.

Julian had requested a meeting.

“He says he has evidence against your father,” Evelyn said.

Lily’s face hardened.

“Why now?”

“Because Richard’s lawyer is preparing to blame everything on Julian.”

👉 The favored son had finally learned that Richard’s love lasted only as long as someone else could take the fall.
