Chapter 16 - JULIAN’S CONFESSION
Julian entered the interview room wearing county-issued clothes.
The confidence was gone.
He looked smaller without whiskey, designer labels, and Richard beside him.
Lily attended through a secure video call from the hospital.
Evelyn sat beside Julian’s public defender.
“I know you hate me,” Julian said.
Lily’s voice remained quiet.
“I almost died while you watched.”
Julian lowered his head.
“I know.”
He admitted that his gambling began six years earlier.
Richard paid the first debt.
Then the second.
Soon Julian understood that consequences belonged to other people.
Richard forged invoices and moved company money.
When Nora’s trust controls prevented larger withdrawals, Richard became desperate to obtain Lily’s signature.
“He told me the surgery was optional,” Julian said.
“You believed him?”
“I chose to.”
The honesty hurt more than another lie.
Julian then revealed a flash drive hidden inside the wine cabinet.
It contained copies of emails, forged forms, false invoices, and recordings Richard had made while planning the guardianship petition.
In one recording, Richard spoke with the physician from the family dinner.
“I don’t need her to be incompetent forever,” Richard said. “I only need control until the audit is finished.”
Another file showed Richard instructing Julian to tell police Lily had attacked first.
Julian agreed to surrender the drive and testify.
In exchange, prosecutors would consider his cooperation.
“You still face charges,” his attorney reminded him.
“I know.”
Lily watched her brother struggle to meet her eyes.
“Why did you help him?” she asked.
Julian’s voice cracked.
“Because when Mom was alive, she expected me to become better. Dad only expected me to stay loyal.”
“That does not excuse you.”
“No.”
For once, Julian did not ask Lily to rescue him.
Before the call ended, he whispered, “I am sorry.”
Lily did not forgive him.
Not yet.
Perhaps not ever.

But she believed he finally understood that apologies did not erase consequences.
