Chapter 3 - THE SON WHO ALWAYS CAME FIRST
Julian arrived the next afternoon driving a borrowed sports car.
He entered the mansion without knocking, tossed his keys onto the marble table, and kissed Richard on both cheeks.
“My favorite son,” Richard said.
Julian laughed.
“I’m your only son.”
Lily watched from the staircase.
Her brother had not called in seven months.
He had missed two of her hospital stays and ignored every message she sent after their mother’s memorial anniversary.
Now he had returned carrying designer luggage and smelling of expensive cologne.
When he saw Lily, his smile tightened.
“You look tired.”
“I’m sick.”
“Right. Dad mentioned something.”
Something.
That was what Julian called the surgery that would decide whether his sister survived the year.
At dinner, Richard opened a bottle of wine that had belonged to Nora.
Lily noticed Julian’s hands.
They would not stop moving.
He checked his phone every few seconds. He tapped his thumb against the table. Twice, he left the dining room to answer calls in a whisper.
When Lily asked whether he was in trouble, Richard answered for him.
“Julian is building something important.”
“What kind of business?” Lily asked.
Julian swallowed half his wine.
“Private investments.”
Richard changed the subject.
Later that night, Lily found Julian alone in the kitchen.
His phone was on the counter.
A message appeared before he could turn it over.
FINAL NOTICE. PAYMENT DUE IN 21 DAYS.
The amount below it made Lily’s breath catch.
$386,000.
Julian grabbed the phone.
“You shouldn’t read other people’s messages.”
“You owe someone almost four hundred thousand dollars?”
“It’s handled.”
“Does Dad know?”
Julian moved closer.
“Dad always takes care of his family.”
The words sounded less like comfort than a warning.
As he walked away, Lily saw a folded bank document sticking from his jacket pocket.
