Chapter 1 - THE HAND AROUND HER THROAT

Lily Hart’s back struck the marble wall so hard that the medical envelope slipped from her fingers.
Her father’s hand closed around her throat.
Richard Hart leaned closer, his face red with rage beneath the cold chandelier light.
“Your brother needs it more than you need your life.”
Lily could barely breathe.
Pain tore through her chest. Her weakened heart hammered against her ribs while she clawed at his wrist with one trembling hand.
Behind him, Julian stood holding a glass of whiskey.
He wore an expensive black shirt covered in gold patterns—the same shirt Lily had bought him for his birthday two years earlier, back when she still believed her brother cared whether she lived.
Julian looked at the envelope near her feet.
Four hundred twelve thousand dollars.
Every cent had been placed in a protected medical trust for the surgery that could save Lily’s life.
“Just sign the transfer,” Julian said. “Stop making this dramatic.”
Lily reached toward the envelope.
Richard tightened his grip.
“That money keeps me alive,” she gasped.
Julian took half a step forward, smiling as though her resistance was already over.
Then his eyes shifted toward the console table.
A phone lay beneath its edge.
The screen was glowing.
A red recording symbol pulsed in the darkness.
Julian’s smile disappeared.
“Dad…” he whispered. “Her phone.”
Richard turned too late.
Lily’s shaking finger touched the screen and sent the recording.
Across town, attorney Evelyn Brooks heard Richard’s voice through her laptop speakers.
She saw the photographs Lily had already sent her.
The threats.
The forged forms.
The surgery schedule.
Evelyn stood so quickly that her chair crashed backward.
“Send units now,” she told the emergency dispatcher.
At the mansion, the doorbell suddenly rang.
Then came the sharp sound of police radios outside.
Julian’s whiskey glass rattled against his teeth.
Richard released Lily and stared toward the front doors as two dark figures appeared through the glass.
Lily slid to the floor, clutching her bruised throat.
She picked up the medical envelope and looked directly at her father.
“You should’ve checked the recording.”
May you like
But when the doors opened, Lily’s vision went black.
👉 The police had heard Richard’s threat—but they still didn’t know why he was willing to let his own daughter die.
