Chapter 12 - THE RECORDING THEY COULD NOT ERASE

Richard grabbed Lily before she reached the stairs.

Her medical envelope fell.

He forced her against the wall.

Julian watched.

Not shocked.

Not surprised.

Waiting.

Richard’s fingers closed around Lily’s throat.

“Your brother needs it more than you need your life.”

The recording application captured every word.

Lily struggled to breathe.

Her chest tightened violently.

Still, she refused to release the envelope.

“That money keeps me alive.”

Julian stepped closer.

“Stop fighting him.”

Lily’s vision blurred.

She saw the phone beneath the table.

She stretched one hand toward it.

Julian finally noticed.

“Dad… her phone.”

Richard released her and lunged toward the table.

Lily touched SEND.

Across town, Evelyn received the file.

Police were already only blocks away.

Richard picked up the phone and smashed it against the marble floor.

The recording continued uploading from the cloud.

The doorbell rang.

Police ordered Richard to step away.

He tried to block their view of Lily.

Julian placed his glass down and raised both hands.

“She attacked him,” Julian said. “Dad was restraining her.”

Lily tried to speak.

No sound came out.

Evelyn entered behind the officers.

She took one look at Lily’s neck and called for an ambulance.

Richard pointed at Evelyn.

“This woman has poisoned my daughter against us.”

Evelyn knelt beside Lily.

“You are safe now.”

Lily wanted to believe her.

But as paramedics lifted her onto a stretcher, Richard called after them.

“She is unstable! I have filed for guardianship!”

One officer hesitated.

The emergency petition was real.

Until a judge rejected it, Richard could still argue that Lily lacked capacity.

Inside the ambulance, Lily’s heart rhythm became dangerously irregular.

The paramedic reached for the defibrillator pads.

Evelyn stood outside holding the medical envelope while police questioned Richard.

Then Julian whispered something into his father’s ear.

Both men looked toward the shattered phone.
