Chapter 4 - HER MOTHER’S LAST PROTECTION

The next morning, Lily called Evelyn Brooks.
Evelyn had been Nora Hart’s closest friend and estate attorney.
She was also the independent trustee responsible for approving every withdrawal from Lily’s medical fund.
They met in Evelyn’s downtown office.
Lily placed a copy of the document she had seen in Julian’s pocket on the desk.
“I only saw the first page,” Lily said. “But my trust was named on it.”
Evelyn’s expression hardened.
“Has your father asked you to sign anything?”
“Not yet.”
“Has Julian?”
“No.”
Evelyn opened a locked cabinet and removed a thick blue folder.
Before she could open it, she studied Lily carefully.
“Your mother created protections because she was worried about what might happen after she was gone.”
“Worried about my illness?”
“Not only your illness.”
Lily felt a chill.
Evelyn explained that Richard had no authority to remove money from the medical trust.
Lily could request approved medical expenses, but she could not legally redirect the fund to Julian, even if she wanted to.
The trust had been designed that way on purpose.
“Why?” Lily asked.
“Because your mother knew guilt could be used like a weapon.”
Evelyn turned the blue folder facedown.
“There are other protections in Nora’s estate plan. I cannot activate them without evidence of coercion, fraud, or financial abuse.”
“What kind of protections?”
“When the time comes, I’ll explain everything.”
Lily did not like the answer.
But she trusted Evelyn more than anyone else connected to her father.
Before Lily left, Evelyn installed an encrypted recording application on her phone.
“If they threaten you, press this button. The file will automatically upload to me.”
“You really think it could become that serious?”
Evelyn looked at the old blue folder.
“I think your mother believed it could.”
That evening, Lily returned home and found Richard waiting beside the staircase.
A silver pen rested on the table.
Beside it lay a transfer authorization.

“Sit down,” he said. “Your brother needs your signature.”
👉 Lily finally understood that her father had already chosen which child he was willing to sacrifice.
