Chapter 6 - THE NAME ON THE FALSE INVOICE

Lily had worked in the family company since college.

Hartwell Medical Supply distributed surgical equipment to hospitals across three states.

Nora had built the company from a rented warehouse.

Richard often claimed he had created the empire alone.

Lily knew better.

The company still used the supply system her mother had designed.

Two days after Richard demanded her signature, Lily went to the corporate office.

She told everyone she wanted to finish her projects before surgery.

In reality, Evelyn had asked her to search for unusual transactions.

Lily found them in an account labeled consulting expenses.

For eighteen months, Hartwell had paid a company called JH Strategic Holdings.

The initials matched Julian Hart.

The address belonged to a mailbox rental store.

More than $1.7 million had been transferred through false invoices.

Lily’s hands began to shake.

She printed the transaction history and slipped it into her bag.

When she turned around, Richard was standing in the doorway.

“What are you doing here?”

“Working.”

“You should be resting.”

His gaze moved to the printer.

Lily forced herself to stay calm.

“I needed hospital forms.”

Richard stepped inside and closed the door.

“Your surgery has made you emotional.”

“I’m perfectly clearheaded.”

“That isn’t what your doctors say.”

Lily frowned.

“My doctors have never spoken to you.”

Richard smiled.

“Families find ways to protect the people they love.”

He took her bag from the desk.

Lily grabbed it back.

For a moment, neither moved.

Then someone knocked on the glass wall.

Grace Bell, the mansion’s longtime house manager, stood outside holding Lily’s medication.

Richard released the bag.

But his eyes told Lily the warning was not over.

That evening, Lily checked the documents.

One page was missing.

The page containing Julian’s largest payment had been removed.

Yet another copy existed.

Grace had quietly taken a photograph through the glass wall before Richard entered.

She handed Lily her phone.

“I promised your mother I would watch over you,” Grace said. “I should have started sooner.”

👉 Grace’s photograph proved the theft—but helping Lily placed her directly in Richard’s path.
