Chapter 14 - THE SISTER HER FATHER ERASED

Claire Moreno arrived at the hospital shortly after midnight.
She looked so much like Nora that Lily forgot how to breathe.
The same dark eyes.
The same gentle way of pressing one hand to her heart when emotional.
Claire stopped beside the bed.
“I have imagined this moment for eight years.”
Lily’s eyes filled.
“Dad said you hated me.”
Claire covered her mouth.
“No.”
“He said you blamed me because Mom became sick while caring for me.”
“That was never true.”
Claire sat beside her and took her hand.
“Nora’s illness had nothing to do with you. Richard told that lie because I discovered what he was doing with the company.”
Claire explained that before Nora died, she found Richard transferring money to accounts connected to Julian.
Julian had begun gambling in college.
Every time he lost, Richard covered the debt with company funds.
Nora planned to remove Richard from management.
She died before the board meeting occurred.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” Lily asked.
“I tried.”
Claire looked toward the unopened letters.
“Richard blocked my number, returned my packages, and threatened to accuse me of harassing a sick child.”
Evelyn brought the brass key and the sealed box from the bank.
Inside were Nora’s original company records, an audio statement, and a handwritten legal instruction.
Nora’s voice played softly through Evelyn’s laptop.
“If Richard ever attempts to use Lily’s illness to control her property, Evelyn must activate the protective clause immediately.”
Lily began to cry.
Her mother’s voice continued.
“Lily has spent her life believing her body makes her a burden. It does not. Richard’s need for control is the burden. Julian’s choices are not her responsibility.”
Evelyn paused the recording.
“There is more,” she said. “But I need to verify the company shares before I explain it.”
The following morning, forensic accountants entered Hartwell’s records.
They discovered $2.4 million in false payments.
The largest transfer had been made only six days earlier.

It bore Lily’s forged electronic signature.
👉 The forgery was serious enough to destroy Richard—but the reason he used Lily’s name was hidden inside Nora’s final ownership documents.
