Chapter 13 - THE LIE BESIDE THE HOSPITAL BED
Lily woke in the cardiac intensive care unit.
Her throat was bruised.
A monitor beeped beside her bed.
Dr. Shah stood nearby with Evelyn.
“The attack triggered a severe arrhythmia,” the doctor said. “You were fortunate the ambulance arrived when it did.”
“When is my surgery?”
Dr. Shah hesitated.
“The hospital has not received the required deposit.”
Lily turned toward Evelyn.
“Why?”
Evelyn placed a printed notice on the blanket.
Richard had used the guardianship petition to request a temporary freeze on the medical trust.
Until the court hearing, the hospital could not withdraw the funds.
“He is still trying to stop it,” Lily whispered.
“Yes.”
A detective entered.
Richard claimed Lily had threatened him with a letter opener.
Julian supported the story.
They said Richard had only restrained her after she became violent.
“Did the hallway have security cameras?” the detective asked.
“Richard disabled them two weeks ago,” Evelyn said.
Lily closed her eyes.
Then Evelyn opened her laptop.
“But he forgot that Lily’s recording uploaded automatically.”
Richard’s voice filled the hospital room.
YOUR BROTHER NEEDS IT MORE THAN YOU NEED YOUR LIFE.
The detective’s face changed.
Julian’s voice followed.
STOP FIGHTING HIM.
The recording captured Richard demanding the signature, withholding Lily’s medicine, and threatening to declare her incompetent.
The detective left to amend the charges.
Evelyn then showed Lily another message.
It had been sent by Grace.
She had found medication logs, financial papers, and old letters Richard had ordered her to destroy.
Among them was a stack of unopened envelopes addressed to Lily.
All were from her aunt Claire.
For eight years, Richard had told Lily that Claire blamed her for Nora’s death and wanted no contact.
The letters said the opposite.
Claire had begged to see her.
She had tried to warn Lily about Richard.
“She is flying here tonight,” Evelyn said.
Lily stared at the letters until tears filled her eyes.
Her father had not only stolen money.
