Chapter 9 - THE SUBSTANCE IN THE GLASS
Laboratory testing identified two substances.
A prescription sedative.
And a medication known to cause disorientation when combined with alcohol.
The dose was unlikely to kill a healthy adult.
But Margaret took heart medication.
The combination could have dangerously lowered her blood pressure and impaired her breathing.
Evan claimed he did not know her prescriptions.
His phone contained photographs of every bottle in Margaret’s bathroom.
Claire had taken them.
The prosecution charged both with attempted poisoning, conspiracy, elder financial exploitation, forgery and attempted property theft.
Their attorneys objected to the word poisoning.
They described the drink as an unauthorized calming mixture.
Dr. Pierce testified that no responsible physician would approve it.
“Especially not with alcohol and her cardiac medication.”
The mobile notary, Peter Sloan, admitted he had notarized the earlier forged power of attorney.
Evan paid him $40,000.
He also agreed to witness the new signatures after dinner.
“What if she appeared confused?” Ortiz asked.
Sloan lowered his eyes.
“Claire was supposed to answer questions for her.”
“What if Margaret could not hold the pen?”
“Evan said they had signature guides.”
Police found the guides at Claire’s home.
They were transparent plastic templates positioned over signature lines.
The video camera would record only Margaret’s hand and voice.
Claire had prepared short answers for her mother to repeat.
Yes, I understand.
This is my choice.
Claire will manage everything.
Evan planned to edit pauses and confusion from the footage.
The goal was not merely a signature.
It was manufactured proof of competence at the exact moment Margaret’s judgment had been chemically impaired.
Margaret watched the evidence hearing from the front row.
She had spent her career analyzing schemes committed by strangers.
Seeing her daughter’s handwriting on the prepared answers felt different from every professional case.
