Chapter 10 - THE BEDROOM CAMERA
Police searched Margaret’s home with her consent.
The smart security system contained deleted footage.
Technicians restored it.
For months, Claire and Evan had observed Margaret remotely.
They watched her sleep on the sofa.
Listened to calls with friends.
Recorded moments when she forgot why she entered a room.
They saved each mistake in a folder labeled DECLINE EVIDENCE.
The same footage contained hours showing Margaret reading financial reports, managing accounts and correcting Evan’s calculations.
Those files had been deleted.
A camera was hidden inside Margaret’s bedroom clock.
Another faced the bathroom medicine cabinet.
Evan used the images to track prescriptions and create a schedule of when Margaret might appear tired.
Claire sometimes logged into the system alone.
One recording showed her watching Margaret cry beside Thomas’s photograph.
Evan entered the room and asked:
“Still feel guilty?”
Claire answered:
“She looks so alone.”
“Then she’ll be relieved when we take over.”
Claire remained silent.
She did not disable the camera.
Investigators also found a false diary created in Margaret’s name.
Entries described hallucinations, confusion and fear of strangers.
The writing had been generated from samples of Margaret’s journals.
Claire planned to place the diary inside the bedroom after the signing.
If Margaret challenged the documents later, they would claim she forgot signing because of dementia.
The scheme needed Margaret discredited before and after the transfer.
Julia found a draft guardianship petition.
It described Claire as a devoted daughter reluctantly seeking protection for an impaired mother.
Evan’s debts were not mentioned.
Neither was the land buyer.
The petition requested immediate authority to sell assets for Margaret’s “future care.”
At the bottom was a sworn statement from Claire.
