Chapter 13 - THE MOTHER ON THE WITNESS LIST
Prosecutors did not require Margaret to testify about every family conflict.
The documents, video and text messages already established much of the scheme.
But only Margaret could explain that she never consented to the power of attorney, land sale or drugged drink.
Claire’s attorney asked whether Margaret would consider supporting a plea agreement.
Claire would admit fraud and exploitation.
In exchange, prosecutors might reduce the attempted-poisoning charge.
Evan refused any plea that required him to admit the drink was intended to impair Margaret.
He claimed Claire acted independently.
Claire’s attorney said Evan was preparing to blame her completely.
Margaret felt no satisfaction.
Claire had betrayed her.
She was still Margaret’s child.
Julia reminded her:
“Loving Claire does not require helping Evan rewrite what happened.”
Margaret agreed to testify truthfully.
Before trial, Claire requested a private meeting.
Ortiz opposed it unless attorneys were present.
Margaret accepted those conditions.
Claire entered the room wearing a county-issued uniform.
She looked smaller without Evan beside her.
“Mom, I’m sorry.”
Margaret waited.
Claire began describing the debt.
Evan’s pressure.
The fear of losing her marriage.
Margaret interrupted.
“Did you know what was in the glass?”
Claire cried.
“I knew it would make you sleepy.”
“Did you know it could interact with my medication?”
“Evan said it was safe.”
“You photographed my prescriptions.”
Claire covered her face.
Margaret continued.
“Did you intend for me to sign afterward?”
“Yes.”
“Would you have stopped if I said no?”
Claire did not answer.
That silence mattered more than the apology.
Margaret stood to leave.
Claire reached toward her.
“Are you going to tell the court I tried to kill you?”
“I will tell the court exactly what you did.”
“I’m your daughter.”

“That is why it hurts. It is not why it becomes less true.”
👉 Margaret chose honesty over protecting Claire from consequences, and Evan’s next move proved he had never intended to protect his wife either.
