Chapter 8 - FEELING SLEEPY ALREADY
Margaret’s false message reached Claire at 9:18 p.m.
Delicious. Feeling sleepy already.
Claire replied almost immediately.
That’s normal. Stay seated. Evan is coming back for you.
Ortiz read the message over Margaret’s shoulder after entering through the restaurant’s side door.
“Ask what happens next.”
Margaret typed:
Should I still sign tonight?
Claire:
Yes. It will be easier at home. We already prepared everything.
Margaret’s hand trembled.
Ortiz noticed.
“Do you need to stop?”
“No.”
“Margaret, we already have enough to intervene.”
“I need to know how far she intended to go.”
She typed:
I feel strange.
Claire responded:
Don’t call anyone. Evan has your medication list. He knows what to do.
The answer removed any possibility that Claire believed the drink was harmless.
She knew Margaret would feel impaired.
She wanted her isolated.
Ortiz instructed officers outside to wait until Evan entered the restaurant.
The sealed sample was transferred to a crime-scene technician.
The manager preserved bar footage showing Evan handling the vial.
Noah provided a statement.
The bartender admitted that Evan described the substance as doctor-approved but refused to show a prescription.
At 9:23, Evan walked through the front doors.
He smiled until he saw Ortiz.
Then he turned toward the exit.
Two officers blocked him.
“What happened?” he asked.
Ortiz held up the sealed sample.
“You tell us.”
Evan claimed the bottle contained a natural sleep supplement Margaret used regularly.
Margaret stood.
“I have never used it.”
He looked toward her.
“You said you were sleepy.”
“I said what Detective Ortiz asked me to say.”
The color left his face.
His phone was seized under the warrant connected to the forged power of attorney.
Claire was arrested at home thirty minutes later.
Officers found the mobile notary waiting in the living room.
