Chapter 15 - CLAIRE’S STATEMENT
Claire stood before the judge without reading from a prepared page.
“I spent years believing my mother’s boundaries were proof she did not love me.”
Margaret sat beside Julia.
Claire continued.
“When she would not erase Evan’s failures with her money, I called her selfish.”
She admitted watching her mother grieve through hidden cameras.
She admitted creating the false diary.
She described photographing medication bottles and helping write answers Margaret was expected to repeat while sedated.
“I told myself she would still be wealthy afterward.”
Her voice broke.
“As though leaving someone something made it acceptable to steal the rest.”
Claire did not ask Margaret to forgive her.
She asked the court to consider that she had cooperated, surrendered the offshore account and helped recover investor funds.
The judge acknowledged her cooperation.
Then he addressed the betrayal.
“You used intimacy as access. You transformed concern into surveillance and grief into evidence of incapacity.”
Claire received a substantial prison sentence for conspiracy, exploitation, forgery, unlawful monitoring and her role in administering the substance.
Her sentence was lower than Evan’s but long enough to reflect deliberate participation.
Evan received a much longer combined sentence.
He was ordered to pay restitution to investors, Margaret and the victims of his development fraud.
Peter Sloan lost his notary commission and received prison time.
The media consultant and clinic employee who supplied the medication were sentenced separately.
Dr. Pierce was cleared of wrongdoing because the false report had been created without his knowledge.
The original land deed remained untouched.
The forged power of attorney was voided.
Margaret’s accounts returned to her sole control.
Outside court, reporters asked whether she felt justice had been done.
Margaret looked toward the building where her daughter had disappeared behind guarded doors.
“Justice recognizes what happened,” she said. “It does not make me stop being her mother.”
She returned home alone.
But for the first time since Thomas died, solitude no longer felt like helplessness.
