Chapter 5 - EVAN’S FAILING EMPIRE
Evan owned Caldwell Urban Development.
For years, he presented himself as a successful builder of luxury apartments and boutique hotels.
His projects appeared in business magazines.
He hosted charity events.
He drove expensive cars.
Most of the success was borrowed.
Caldwell Urban Development owed more than fourteen million dollars.
Two lenders had threatened foreclosure.
A downtown hotel project had stalled after structural violations.
Investors accused Evan of moving funds between projects to conceal losses.
Claire knew part of the truth.
She did not know everything.
Evan told her one final investment would save the company.
The land beneath Margaret’s house sat beside a proposed highway extension and a future medical campus.
A developer had quietly offered nine million dollars for the property.
Margaret rejected the offer before Thomas died.
She did not want the family land divided.
Evan had already promised the buyer he could obtain it.
He needed authority to sell.
Claire initially resisted.
“My mother will never agree.”
“She doesn’t understand what the property is worth to us.”
“It belongs to her.”
“It will belong to you eventually.”
“That could be twenty years.”
Evan leaned closer.
“We do not have twenty months.”
He explained the power of attorney as temporary.
They would sell only a small section.
Repay the money after his business recovered.
Margaret might be angry, but she would remain wealthy.
Claire allowed herself to believe no one would truly be harmed.
Then Evan’s debts worsened.
He began opening credit lines using Claire’s signature.
He mortgaged their home twice.
He told her they could lose everything before the end of the month.
Fear turned Claire’s hesitation into cooperation.
She collected Margaret’s handwriting.
Helped install monitoring software.
Repeated stories about memory loss.
When the real doctor refused to support incapacity, Claire helped Evan create the false report.
Still, she resisted physically drugging her mother.
At least at first.
Evan introduced the idea as a harmless sleep aid.
“She’ll be relaxed during the signing.”
“That’s not consent.”
“She already intends for you to inherit everything.”
“After she dies.”
“She is alone and frightened. We are giving her certainty.”
Claire looked at the mounting debt notices.
Then she asked:
