Chapter 7 - THE DINNER CLAIRE CALLED A NEW BEGINNING

Claire chose the most expensive restaurant in the city.
She said Thomas would have loved it.
Margaret knew he would have complained about the tiny portions.
Claire wore the pearl earrings Margaret gave her on her wedding day.
Evan ordered champagne.
For the first twenty minutes, they behaved like a family trying to heal.
They spoke about Thomas.
Claire apologized for pressuring Margaret.
“I’m scared of losing you,” she said.
Margaret looked at her daughter carefully.
“Then stop trying to take control away from me.”
Claire lowered her eyes.
Evan intervened.
“No one wants control. We want clarity.”
He produced a slim folder.
The visible first page was a healthcare directive.
The property authority remained hidden beneath it.
Margaret did not touch the pen.
“I’ll review everything tomorrow with Julia.”
Evan’s jaw tightened.
“The buyer needs confirmation by nine.”
“What buyer?”
Claire looked sharply at him.
He recovered.
“The senior community. A unit may become available.”
“I never agreed to move.”
Evan raised his glass.
“Then perhaps tonight should simply be about relaxing.”
After dessert, Claire claimed they had to leave for a charity reception.
Evan spoke privately to the bartender before returning to the table.
Noah Reyes was carrying clean glasses nearby.
He saw Evan open a small bottle beneath the bar.
He heard him say:
“Only half. She needs to remain responsive.”
The bartender refused.
Evan placed cash on the counter.
He claimed the substance was a prescribed supplement.
The bartender reluctantly set the bottle aside and called the manager.
Before Helen Park arrived, another server picked up the prepared drink, believing it was a standard order.
Noah intercepted the glass too late to stop it from reaching Margaret’s table.
Claire kissed her mother.
“Finish your drink.”
Then she and Evan left.
Noah watched Margaret place her fingers around the glass.
He had seconds to choose between protecting the restaurant and protecting the woman.
He leaned toward her.

“Ma’am… don’t drink that.”
👉 Noah’s warning stopped Margaret from swallowing the substance, but the controlled text exchange would show whether Claire knew exactly what Evan had ordered.
