Chapter 17 - DINNER AT THE SAME TABLE
One year after the arrest, Margaret reserved the same table.
Julia joined her.
Detective Ortiz came after work.
Noah served them, though he was preparing to leave the restaurant for his new role at the center.
Margaret ordered sparkling water.
When the glass arrived, her hand paused.
Noah noticed.
“I can open the bottle here.”
Margaret nodded.
He broke the seal in front of her.
There was no shame in needing reassurance.
For months, Margaret had criticized herself for not detecting the plan sooner.
She was a forensic accountant.
She had identified fraud for a living.
How could she miss what happened inside her own family?
Ortiz answered:
“Professional suspicion is not how people are supposed to live with their children.”
Claire had access because Margaret loved her.
The betrayal did not prove Margaret was foolish.
It proved Claire misused trust.
During dinner, Margaret received her first approved letter from prison.
She did not open it immediately.
After dessert, she read it privately.
Claire wrote that therapy had forced her to examine resentment without Evan’s explanations.
She admitted competing with Thomas for Margaret’s attention long after childhood.
She admitted marrying a man who validated every grievance because it made her easier to control.
The letter ended:
I am learning that understanding why I did it is not the same as asking you to make it hurt less.
Margaret cried quietly.
She did not respond that night.
Several weeks later, she wrote:
I love you. I do not trust you. Both things are true.
Claire replied only once.
I understand.
Margaret began allowing letters every three months.
No calls.
No visits.
Not yet.
Boundaries no longer felt like a failure of motherhood.
