Chapter 6 - THE ACCOUNTANT WHO DISAPPEARED
Evan’s financial controller was a woman named Priya Desai.
She discovered a draft agreement to sell Margaret’s land.
The document listed Claire as attorney-in-fact.
Attached was the forged power of attorney.
Priya questioned Evan.
He told her the family had approved everything.
She requested written confirmation from Margaret’s attorney.
The following day, Evan fired her.
He claimed she mishandled investor funds.
Priya left with copies of several records.
She tried contacting Margaret directly.
The emails were redirected by Evan’s monitoring software.
Her first certified letter disappeared from the mailbox.
The second reached Julia Mercer’s office.
Inside were bank statements, the secret land-sale agreement and messages between Evan and a private mobile notary.
One message read:
Signing must happen after dinner. She may be tired and confused. Do not ask unnecessary questions.
The notary replied:
I need her awake enough to respond.
Evan:
She will respond. Claire knows what to say.
Another message referenced an amber vial supplied through a wellness clinic.
Julia delivered the records to Ortiz.
The detective wanted to arrest Evan immediately for the forged filing.
The prosecutor advised patience.
The existing evidence proved attempted fraud.
It did not yet prove Claire’s role or the intended use of the substance.
Ortiz obtained authority to monitor communications related to the sale and preserve financial records.
Margaret was offered police protection.
She declined visible officers inside her home.
“If Claire knows I am aware, Evan will move the money or run.”
Ortiz agreed to a controlled plan.
Margaret would allow Claire to believe she remained emotionally vulnerable.
She would continue discussing the estate update.
No document would be signed.
No substance would be consumed.
Police would remain nearby during any planned meeting.
Margaret hated deceiving her daughter.
Ortiz reminded her:
“Claire is already participating in a deception designed to take your legal identity.”
Margaret understood.
Still, when Claire called and invited her to an intimate dinner at an upscale restaurant, Margaret almost refused.
Then Claire added:
May you like
“We can finish the family papers afterward, Mom. You won’t have to worry anymore.”
👉 The dinner invitation confirmed the signing plan, but Margaret still did not know whether her daughter would personally allow the drug to reach the table.
