Chapter 9 - THE LIE VICTOR TOLD TOO QUICKLY
Victor returned to Denver before sunrise.
He called police at 7:12 a.m.
His story was carefully rehearsed.
Elena had become emotionally unstable during pregnancy.
They argued at home.
She drove away alone.
Victor claimed he had spent the night searching for her.
Evelyn confirmed every detail.
Mason and Grant said they had been at the Hale offices until morning.
Then Victor called the insurance company.
Elena had been missing for less than six hours.
He reported a presumed accidental death near Blackthorn Mountain.
The claims representative told him no payout could begin without a body or legal declaration.
Victor insisted the situation was urgent because Elena’s trust had business obligations.
He filed electronically anyway.
That mistake created a permanent timestamp.
At 7:46 a.m., military rescuers delivered Elena to St. Catherine’s Medical Center.
Her identity was initially withheld because Major Hart believed the person responsible might be searching for her.
Doctors treated hypothermia, a fractured wrist, cracked ribs and placental trauma.
The baby’s heartbeat remained stable but required constant monitoring.
Elena drifted in and out of consciousness.
Each time she woke, she repeated the same sentence.
“My husband pushed me.”
Major Hart stayed near the room.
The Blackthorn rescue zone bordered a National Guard aviation corridor, which was why her unit had responded to the emergency beacon.
She contacted local detectives and Adrian Cross.
Adrian arrived at the hospital within two hours.
He identified Elena through trust records and authorized emergency protection.
Only then did the hospital notify Victor that his wife had been found.
Victor came with Evelyn, Mason, Grant and a family attorney.
They expected an unconscious woman.
Instead, they entered a room where Elena was awake.
“She’s supposed to be dead,” Evelyn blurted.
Every person in the room heard her.
Major Hart immediately activated her body camera.
Elena accused Victor directly.
Hart displayed the insurance claim.
“You filed too early.”
Adrian entered and ordered the claim sealed.
Victor’s attorney tried to take control of the conversation.
He demanded Elena’s medical records.
He argued that pregnancy complications had caused confusion.
Adrian placed the fraud-investigation form at the foot of the bed.
Victor refused to sign it.
Elena looked at him.
“Let him sign the claim confirmation.”
Adrian understood.
The insurer needed Victor to certify that he believed Elena had died in an accident and that he had no involvement.
Submitting a false certification after learning she was alive would strengthen the fraud case.
Victor thought Elena wanted to release the money.
He grabbed the pen.
Evelyn stopped him.
For once, mother and son disagreed in public.
“Don’t sign anything,” she said.
