Chapter 14 - THE FALSE SURRENDER
Hospital security locked down the neonatal floor.
Every employee badge was audited.
The photograph had been taken by a contract nurse named Paige Mercer, whose brother worked for Hale Development.
Paige confessed that Evelyn paid her to take the picture and place the envelope.
She insisted there had been no plan to abduct the child.
Major Hart did not believe her.
Elena understood what Victor wanted her to sign.
The authorization Hale Development had demanded from the beginning.
A $20 million loan secured by trust assets.
Victor needed it to pay the lender before the company’s fraud became public.
Elena told Major Hart she would cooperate with a controlled meeting.
Adrian refused.
“They tried to kill you.”
“They will keep running unless they believe they still have something to gain.”
Investigators prepared documents that appeared to authorize the loan.
Inside the signature packet was a tracing strip and digital identifier that would confirm who handled it.
Elena recorded a video message.
“I will sign. Leave my daughter alone. Tell me where.”
Victor responded through an encrypted account.
The exchange would occur at an unfinished Hale Development tower in downtown Denver.
He instructed Elena to send Adrian.
Alone.
Adrian volunteered immediately.
Before leaving, he entered the NICU and stood beside Isabel’s incubator.
Elena watched him place his hand against the glass.
“You love her,” Elena said.
Adrian’s eyes remained on the baby.
“I loved you before you were born too.”
Elena studied him.
The words felt too personal.
She remembered the way he had looked at her during their first trust meeting.
The sadness when he mentioned Isabel.
The protection that exceeded any trustee’s duty.
“What aren’t you telling me?”
Adrian closed his eyes.
“This is not the time.”
“It may be the only time.”
He finally faced her.
“Your mother did not create the trust alone.”
Elena’s heartbeat quickened.
“Who helped her?”
“I did.”
“Why?”
Adrian looked through the glass at the premature child fighting to breathe.
“Because Isabel was protecting our daughter.”
Elena stopped moving.
Adrian’s voice broke.
“You are my daughter, Elena.”
The man her mother claimed had abandoned her had been standing beside her for months.
But before Elena could demand the truth, Major Hart entered.
Victor had changed the meeting conditions.
He wanted Elena at the tower.

And he had sent a live image proving Evelyn was already inside the hospital.
👉 Elena had just learned Adrian was her father—but there was no time to confront the past while Evelyn was hunting for her newborn daughter.
