Chapter 11 - THE COURTSHIP WAS AN OPERATION

The investigator’s name was Calvin Ross.

He had worked for the Hale family for nearly a decade.

Police searched his office and discovered a file labeled MARLOWE.

It began fourteen months before Victor met Elena.

The file contained photographs of Elena leaving work, visiting her mother’s grave and meeting Adrian’s attorneys.

There were copies of sealed trust correspondence.

Bank statements.

Medical records.

Even a diagram of the charity banquet parking lot.

The battery cable on Elena’s car had not come loose by accident.

Calvin had disconnected it.

Victor’s heroic arrival had been planned.

The handwritten letters, chance encounters and carefully chosen dates had all been based on information collected through surveillance.

Elena sat in her hospital bed while Major Hart showed her the evidence.

Every beautiful memory changed shape.

Victor had not remembered her coffee order because he listened.

He had purchased it from a report.

He knew which flowers reminded her of her mother because Calvin photographed Elena placing them on Isabel’s grave.

He knew she feared abandonment because he had stolen therapy notes.

Elena turned her face away.

“I loved a person who never existed.”

Adrian sat beside her.

“The love you gave was real. His deception doesn’t change who you were.”

The investigation also revealed why Victor had chosen that year to approach her.

Calvin had intercepted a letter indicating the trust would become more flexible once Elena married or had a child.

The Hale family assumed a husband would gain control.

They had not read the full terms.

When Adrian refused Victor’s investment proposal, the strategy changed from financial manipulation to murder.

Calvin agreed to cooperate after learning Evelyn intended to blame him for the entire scheme.

He admitted monitoring Elena.

He admitted disabling her car at the banquet.

He also admitted researching locations where winter accidents commonly occurred.

Blackthorn Cliff was on his list.

But Calvin denied knowing Victor would attempt the murder during the lodge trip.

“I thought they were going to frighten her into signing.”

Major Hart asked who removed the guardrail.

Calvin named Mason Pike.

Mason was arrested.

Under questioning, Mason admitted removing the barrier and disabling the lodge radio.

He insisted Victor said Elena would be drugged and placed inside a crashed vehicle.

When Elena avoided the drugged tea, Victor changed the plan.

Mason said Evelyn ordered him to continue.

Grant began cooperating soon afterward.

The conspiracy was coming apart.

But Elena remained vulnerable.

Victor’s lawyers filed an emergency petition seeking control over the unborn child’s future trust, claiming Elena’s injuries had made her mentally incompetent.

A judge scheduled a hearing within forty-eight hours.

Victor had failed to kill Elena.

Now he planned to take her baby through the courts.

👉 To keep Victor away from her child, Elena would have to prove she was competent while still recovering from the fall he caused.
