Chapter 17 - THE LAST FALL
The bullet struck a concrete pillar beside Elena.
Officers returned fire only after Victor turned the gun toward Adrian.
A tactical round hit Victor’s shoulder.
The weapon fell from his hand.
Victor stumbled backward toward the open edge.
For one second, his heels crossed empty space.
Adrian lunged forward and caught his wrist.
Victor hung above the city.
The man he had threatened was now the only person preventing his death.
“Pull me up!” Victor screamed.
Adrian strained against the weight.
Officers rushed forward and secured Victor with a rescue line.
They dragged him onto the floor.
Victor stared at Adrian in disbelief.
“Why did you save me?”
Adrian looked toward Elena.
“Because my daughter should never have to wonder whether we became like you.”
Victor was handcuffed.
Paramedics treated his shoulder under armed guard.
He continued demanding the signed authorization until an officer showed him the document.
Across the final page were words Victor had failed to read:
COERCED TRANSACTION—LAW-ENFORCEMENT EVIDENCE COPY. NO FINANCIAL AUTHORITY GRANTED.
The signature did not release $20 million.
It proved the attempted extortion.
At the hospital, Evelyn learned Victor had been captured.
She blamed him immediately.
She claimed he had manipulated her.
Victor told investigators the opposite.
Their loyalty lasted only as long as they believed betrayal might reduce their sentences.
Mason and Grant provided additional testimony.
Calvin surrendered every surveillance file.
Paige admitted the hospital threat.
Prosecutors connected the entire conspiracy from the staged parking-lot meeting to Blackthorn Cliff.
The insurance claim became central evidence.
Victor had filed before police knew Elena was missing.
He had identified Blackthorn Mountain in the claim despite telling officers Elena had left home alone.
He had certified that her death was accidental before any investigation began.
The $50 million he believed would save Hale Development instead documented his motive.
Elena returned to the NICU after the tower rescue.
Adrian stood outside, afraid to enter after confessing the truth.
Elena approached him.
“I’m angry.”
“You should be.”
“You should have told me sooner.”
“I know.”
She looked through the glass at Isabel.
“But you came when Victor tried to erase us.”
Adrian nodded through tears.
Elena opened the door.
“Then come meet your granddaughter properly.”
Adrian followed her inside.
For the first time, Elena allowed herself to imagine a future larger than survival.

But first, she would have to face Victor in court.
👉 Victor had failed to kill Elena and failed to steal the trust, but his final defense would accuse her of planning the entire mountain incident to destroy the Hale family.
