Chapter 3 - THE FORTUNE ELENA NEVER KNEW SHE HAD
Adrian Cross contacted Elena three weeks after she announced her pregnancy.
His name appeared on a formal letter from Cross Meridian Trust.
Elena nearly threw it away.
She assumed it was another financial advertisement.
Then she saw her mother’s name.
The letter requested a private meeting regarding the Isabel Marlowe Family Trust.
Victor offered to accompany her.
The meeting took place in a quiet office overlooking downtown Denver.
Adrian stood when Elena entered.
He stared at her for a moment too long.
“You look like your mother,” he said.
Elena immediately disliked the sadness in his voice.
Adrian explained that Isabel had invested in a small medical-technology company twenty-six years earlier. The company later became part of Cross Meridian Holdings.
Her shares had grown dramatically.
Isabel placed them in a protected trust for Elena and any future children.
Elena’s current interest was worth approximately $50 million.
She stopped breathing.
“That can’t be right.”
“It is.”
Victor reached for Elena’s hand beneath the table.
He appeared shocked.
Adrian watched him carefully.
The trust had unusual conditions.
Elena could receive investment income, but the core assets would remain protected until her thirty-fifth birthday.
If Elena died after having a child, the money would pass to that child.
Her spouse could become temporary custodian only if approved by the trustee.
There was also a separate $50 million life-insurance policy created to protect the trust from taxes and business losses following Elena’s death.
Victor asked several detailed questions.
Who controlled the payout?
How quickly could a claim be processed?
Would the husband automatically manage the child’s inheritance?
Adrian answered cautiously.
“The surviving parent may petition for control. Nothing is automatic.”
Victor smiled.
“Of course. I’m only thinking about our baby.”
Elena asked why her mother had never told her.
Adrian looked toward the window.
“Isabel wanted you to build a life before money changed the people around you.”
The answer bothered Elena.
It sounded less like financial planning and more like a warning.
After the meeting, Victor behaved as though nothing had changed.
He insisted Elena continue working.
He told her the fortune belonged to her.
At dinner that night, however, he suggested they update their wills.
“For the baby,” he said.
Within days, Evelyn brought them the name of a family attorney.
The new estate documents would give Victor broad authority if Elena became incapacitated.
Elena refused to sign.
Victor kissed her forehead.
“There’s no pressure.”
But late that night, Elena heard him arguing with Evelyn in the kitchen.
“She doesn’t trust me yet,” Victor whispered.
Evelyn answered, “Then make sure she has no one else to trust.”
Elena remained frozen in the hallway.

It was the first time she wondered whether her marriage had begun for reasons that had nothing to do with love.
👉 Elena started questioning Victor’s interest in the trust—but she had no idea his family company was already weeks away from financial collapse.
