Chapter 13 - THE BABY WHO FOUGHT WITH HER
Elena’s daughter was born at 3:18 a.m.
She weighed four pounds, two ounces.
For eight terrible seconds, the delivery room was silent.
Then the baby cried.
Elena began sobbing.
Doctors carried the infant to the neonatal team. Her lungs were underdeveloped, but her heartbeat was strong.
Elena named her Isabel Naomi.
Isabel for the mother who had tried to protect her through the trust.
Naomi for the officer who found them in the snow.
Major Hart cried when Elena told her.
The baby remained in the neonatal intensive care unit.
Elena visited in a wheelchair, placing one finger through the incubator opening.
Isabel wrapped her tiny hand around it.
“You already survived something impossible,” Elena whispered.
Outside the hospital, Victor gave an interview through his attorney.
He congratulated Elena publicly.
Then he claimed hospital security was preventing a loving father from seeing his premature child.
The strategy created sympathy among people who had not seen the evidence.
Evelyn hired a public-relations firm to portray the Hale family as victims of a corporate takeover.
They released photographs of Victor assembling the nursery months earlier.
They did not release the message he had sent his mother afterward:
Once the baby exists, Adrian can’t keep us out of the trust.
Major Hart found that message during a search of Evelyn’s cloud account.
She also found a photograph of the Blackthorn guardrail taken one week before the trip.
Mason stood beside it holding cutting equipment.
In the corner of the image, Victor’s SUV was visible.
The evidence gave prosecutors enough to request arrest warrants.
Victor and Evelyn disappeared hours before police reached their home.
Their passports remained in the safe.
Their cars were found at a private airfield.
A charter pilot reported that Evelyn had offered him cash to fly them to Canada without filing a passenger manifest.
He refused.
Security footage showed them leaving the airfield in Calvin Ross’s former vehicle.
Investigators believed they were still in Colorado.
Then a nurse discovered an envelope taped beneath the handle of Elena’s wheelchair.
Inside was a photograph of baby Isabel in the NICU.
The image had been taken from inside the secured unit.
Written across the back were five words:
Sign, or she comes with us.

Someone working inside the hospital had helped the Hales reach Elena’s daughter.
👉 Victor could no longer reach the $50 million through the law, so he threatened the only person Elena would sacrifice everything to protect.
