Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD
“She’s supposed to be dead.”
Evelyn Hale’s words cut through the hospital room louder than the fetal monitor.
Elena sat upright against the white pillows, one arm wrapped protectively around her eight-month pregnant belly. Her hospital gown was stained with dirt. Purple bruises covered her cheek and throat. Melted snow still dampened the ends of her hair.
Beside her, Major Naomi Hart stood between the bed and the people who had just entered.
Victor Hale stared at his wife as though he were seeing a ghost.
Only twelve hours earlier, he had watched Elena disappear over the edge of Blackthorn Cliff.
He had waited in the snow.
He had listened for her scream to stop.
Then he had driven away.
Now the monitor beside her bed recorded two steady heartbeats.
Elena’s.
And the baby’s.
Victor’s mother recovered first.
She pointed at Elena with a trembling hand.
“This woman is confused. She had an accident.”
Elena gripped Major Hart’s sleeve.
“He pushed me.”
Victor’s face drained of color.
Major Hart raised a tablet. On the screen was a $50 million insurance policy, an emergency payout request and Victor’s electronic signature.
“You filed too early,” she said.
The hospital door opened again.
Adrian Cross entered with two attorneys and a private security team. He was an older man with silver hair, a black overcoat and the quiet authority of someone accustomed to making entire rooms fall silent.
His eyes found Elena first.
Pain crossed his face.
Then he looked at Victor.
The pain became something colder.
“Seal the claim,” Adrian ordered.
Victor stepped forward.
“You can’t do that. I’m her husband.”
“Not for much longer.”
Adrian placed a thick black folder at the foot of Elena’s bed.
Across the front were the words:
FRAUD INVESTIGATION PENDING.
Elena wiped a tear from her cheek.
“Let him sign it.”
Victor looked at her.
For the first time since they had met, Elena saw fear in his eyes.
He had believed her death would make him rich.
He did not yet understand that filing the claim had connected him to everything that happened on the mountain.
Evelyn moved toward the door.
Major Hart’s soldiers blocked her.
“No one leaves,” Hart said.
Victor looked from the officers to Adrian, then back to the wife he had tried to kill.
“What did you do?” he whispered.
Elena rested her hand over the child still moving inside her.
“I survived.”
But survival was only the first part of Elena’s plan.
