Chapter 4 - THE DEBT BEHIND THE HALE NAME
Hale Development appeared successful.
Its name covered luxury towers, mountain resorts and gated communities across Colorado.
But appearances had become the company’s most valuable product.
Victor’s father had expanded too quickly before his death. Projects stalled. Interest rates rose. Lawsuits multiplied.
Victor and Evelyn concealed the losses by borrowing against unfinished developments.
By the time Victor met Elena, Hale Development owed more than $90 million.
One major lender had given them six months to repay.
Evelyn believed Elena’s trust was the answer.
At first, the plan was simple.
Victor would marry Elena.
After the baby was born, he would persuade her to invest part of the trust in Hale Development.
If she refused, he would seek custody of the child and use his position as the child’s father to influence the trust.
Elena’s pregnancy accelerated everything.
The lenders were no longer willing to wait.
Victor began pressuring her gently.
He showed her architectural drawings for a rehabilitation hospital Hale Development supposedly intended to build.
“You understand how much this could help your patients,” he said.
The hospital was real.
The financing behind it was not.
Victor wanted Elena to authorize a $20 million trust-backed loan that would be redirected to Hale’s creditors.
Adrian rejected the request.
“The trust does not exist to rescue your husband’s company.”
Victor smiled politely during the meeting.
In the parking garage, he punched the steering wheel until his knuckles bled.
Elena flinched.
He immediately apologized.
“I feel like Adrian thinks I married you for money.”
“Did you?”
Victor turned toward her.
His expression made Elena regret asking.
Then he smiled and touched her stomach.
“I married both of you because you are my family.”
That night, he brought flowers.
Two days later, Elena discovered that the brake warning light in her car had been disconnected.
The mechanic said someone had tampered with it.
Victor blamed the dealership.
Evelyn accused Elena of becoming paranoid.
“You have pregnancy hormones and too much time alone,” she said.
Elena began writing down incidents in a private notebook.
Missing keys.
Opened mail.
Strange calls that ended when she answered.
Victor asking whether she had changed the trust beneficiaries.
She hid the notebook inside an air vent.
One evening, Victor found her standing on a chair beneath that vent.
He asked what she was doing.
Elena said she had heard a noise.
Victor stared at the wall for several seconds.
Then he helped her down.
His hands remained around her waist longer than necessary.
“You shouldn’t climb when you’re pregnant,” he said softly. “You could fall.”
The word stayed with Elena long after he left the room.
May you like
Fall.
👉 Victor had begun turning ordinary accidents into possibilities—but Elena’s first undeniable proof would come from a conversation he never realized she recorded.
