Chapter 7 - THE BRACELET ADRIAN GAVE HER
Two days before Victor found the notebook, Adrian had given Elena a silver medical bracelet.
It looked ordinary.
Inside was a small emergency locator designed for backcountry rescue teams.
Cross Meridian manufactured the device for military pilots and mountain responders.
“If you ever feel unsafe,” Adrian told her, “press the center twice.”
The beacon would transmit her location through a satellite network.
Elena wore it beneath her sleeve.
Victor never noticed.
During the drive to Blackthorn Mountain, snow thickened around the SUV.
Evelyn followed in a second vehicle with two Hale security employees, Mason Pike and Grant Bell.
They told Elena the men were there because a storm was approaching.
She knew better.
The lodge stood alone among dark pine trees.
There were no other guests.
Victor took Elena’s phone and claimed he needed to charge it.
Mason removed the battery from the lodge’s emergency radio.
That evening, Evelyn served Elena tea.
Elena pretended to drink but poured it into a plant when no one was watching.
Minutes later, Victor asked whether she felt sleepy.
She lied and said yes.
He carried her to the bedroom.
Once he left, Elena activated the bracelet.
A tiny vibration confirmed the distress signal had transmitted.
She did not know who would receive it or how quickly help could arrive.
Outside, the storm intensified.
At midnight, Victor returned wearing snow boots.
He told Elena the lodge’s generator had failed and they needed to drive to a nearby ranger station.
Elena knew there was no ranger station on that road.
She resisted.
Mason and Grant entered.
Victor’s expression became empty.
“Don’t make this harder.”
They forced Elena into a coat and led her outside.
The SUV stopped near the Blackthorn overlook.
Wind tore across the mountain.
The guardrail had already been removed from one section of the road.
Evelyn waited in the second vehicle.
She never stepped into the snow.
Victor walked Elena toward the cliff.
She begged him to think about their child.
He refused to look at her belly.
“You should have signed the investment authorization.”
“You married me for the money.”
“I tried to make the marriage work.”
“You locked me in a room.”
“You were going to destroy everything my father built.”
At the edge of the cliff, Elena heard a faint sound through the storm.
A helicopter.
Far away, but approaching.
Her beacon had worked.
Victor heard it too.
Panic crossed his face.
He grabbed Elena’s shoulders.
She screamed his name.

Then the man who had once promised to protect their child shoved his pregnant wife into the darkness.
👉 Victor watched Elena vanish beneath the snowstorm—but the cliff held one narrow ledge he had never seen from the road.
