Chapter 5 - THE VOICE BEHIND THE CLOSED DOOR
Elena purchased a second phone and kept it hidden inside the lining of her work bag.
She hated the secrecy.
She hated that she had begun measuring Victor’s footsteps in the hallway.
Most of all, she hated that part of her still wanted an innocent explanation.
One afternoon, Evelyn invited her to lunch.
Halfway through the meal, Elena became dizzy.
Evelyn insisted she rest in an upstairs guest room.
Elena woke nearly two hours later.
Her purse was open.
The key to her mother’s legal box was missing.
She walked quietly toward Evelyn’s study and heard voices behind the closed door.
Victor was inside.
“So the child receives everything?” Evelyn asked.
“The child inherits the trust,” Victor replied. “I petition as guardian.”
“And the insurance?”
“Fifty million in cash. Adrian can delay it, but he can’t stop a valid accidental-death claim forever.”
Elena’s knees weakened.
Evelyn lowered her voice.
“What if she changes the policy?”
“She can’t without the trustee. And Adrian doesn’t know she’s suspicious.”
“You should have handled this before she started asking questions.”
Victor answered after a pause.
“I’m not killing my wife.”
Elena almost entered the room.
Then Evelyn said, “No one said killing. Accidents happen in winter.”
Silence followed.
Victor finally spoke.
“She’s pregnant.”
“That is why the timing matters.”
Elena pressed the hidden phone against the door and recorded every word.
Victor did not agree to murder her.
But he did not leave.
Instead, he asked how long a missing person had to remain missing before a death certificate could be issued.
Elena returned to the bedroom before they came out.
She pretended to be asleep.
On the drive home, Victor held her hand.
Evelyn had replaced the missing key in Elena’s purse.
That night, Elena called Adrian.
She asked to meet without Victor.
Adrian listened to the recording twice.
His face changed when Evelyn mentioned an accident.
“We need to get you somewhere safe.”
“I need proof.”
“You have enough to leave.”
“Not enough to stop them from claiming I imagined it.”
Adrian urged her to contact police.
The recording was disturbing, but Victor’s attorney could argue that they were discussing estate procedures rather than planning harm.
Elena agreed to move into a secure apartment the following morning.
She never made it.
Before sunrise, Victor stood beside their bed holding her hidden notebook.
He had found the air vent.

And after reading every page, he knew his wife was preparing to run.
👉 Victor finally understood that Elena was no longer afraid enough to stay—and that discovery transformed his mother’s suggestion into a plan.
