Chapter 15 - THE WOMAN IN THE WHITE SUIT
Evelyn entered the hospital disguised beneath a dark coat, medical mask and borrowed employee badge.
Underneath, she still wore the white suit from the day Elena returned alive.
She believed appearances were armor.
Major Hart ordered every exit sealed.
Security teams searched floor by floor.
Elena refused to leave the NICU until officers confirmed Isabel was safe.
Then a fire alarm sounded.
Smoke appeared in a storage area two floors below.
Hospital staff began preparing to evacuate vulnerable patients.
Major Hart recognized the tactic.
“It’s a diversion.”
Evelyn emerged from a service corridor near the neonatal unit carrying an empty medical transport case.
Paige had provided access codes before her arrest.
Evelyn reached the incubator room but found Elena waiting inside with two armed officers.
For a second, neither woman spoke.
Then Evelyn removed her mask.
“You destroyed my family.”
Elena stood between her and Isabel.
“Your family tried to murder mine.”
“Hale Development employed thousands.”
“You risked thousands of lives to hide your debt.”
Evelyn’s face twisted.
“Victor loved you until you turned him against his duty.”
“Victor never loved me.”
“He chose you.”
“No. You selected me.”
Evelyn glanced toward the incubator.
“That child belongs to the Hale family.”
Elena stepped closer.
“She is not an asset. She is not a beneficiary you can control. She is my daughter.”
Evelyn reached into her coat.
The officers raised their weapons.
She slowly removed a phone.
Victor was on the screen from the unfinished tower.
He held Adrian at gunpoint.
“Bring the loan authorization,” Victor said. “Or your father falls from a building the way you were supposed to fall from that cliff.”
Evelyn smiled.
She believed the revelation about Adrian would weaken Elena.
Instead, it clarified everything.
Victor and Evelyn had built their power by turning love into leverage.
Elena would not allow them to do it again.
She agreed to take the documents to the tower under one condition.
Evelyn would remain in custody at the hospital.
Victor refused.
Evelyn tried to run.
Major Hart blocked her and placed her in handcuffs.
For the first time, Evelyn screamed.
“You cannot arrest me! Do you know who I am?”
Hart tightened the restraints.
“Yes. A woman who just entered a secured neonatal unit using a stolen badge.”
Evelyn was taken away.
Victor still had Adrian.
Elena kissed the incubator glass.
