Chapter 9 - EVERYONE SAW
The plate struck the side of Elena’s head.
Porcelain exploded.
Gravy covered her hair and dress.
The room filled with screams.
For several seconds, Elena heard nothing but a high ringing sound.
Then Jackson’s voice broke through.
“How dare you say no to my mother?”
He expected Elena to collapse.
He expected her to apologize.
Instead, she forced herself upright.
“You have no idea what I’m capable of.”
Her hand found her phone.
Genesis ordered her to put it away.
Jackson stepped forward.
Aunt Marlene rose first.
“Don’t touch her again.”
Caleb moved between Jackson and Elena.
The rest of the family remained frozen.
Elena called 911.
“My husband assaulted me. Every person in this room witnessed it.”
Jackson tried to change his tone.
He called it an accident.
He said Elena had turned too quickly.
Genesis claimed the plate had slipped.
But Elena had already described the attack to the dispatcher.
Sirens approached.
Jackson looked around the table.
“You all saw her provoke me.”
No one answered.
He pointed at his cousin.
“Tell them she was threatening Mother.”
The cousin looked down.
When police entered, Jackson attempted to greet them calmly.
Officer Ramirez saw the blood on Elena’s neck and immediately separated them.
Jackson was placed against the wall.
Genesis protested.
“This is a private family disagreement.”
“An assault is not private,” the officer replied.
Paramedics examined Elena.
She needed stitches but remained conscious.
As Jackson was handcuffed, he stared at Elena with disbelief.
“You’re destroying our marriage.”
Elena looked at him.
“You did that when you picked up the plate.”
Officer Ramirez began asking witnesses what happened.
Several relatives hesitated.
Genesis repeated that it had been an accident.
Then Marlene spoke.
“He hit her deliberately.”
Caleb nodded.
“I saw it too.”
One by one, the room changed.
People who had arrived prepared to pressure Elena realized they could be questioned under oath.
An officer photographed the broken plate.
Another collected the papers from the table.
Genesis tried to grab the folder.
The officer stopped her.
“What are these documents?”
“Family business,” she said.
The officer read the first page.
Then he looked toward Elena.
“Were they trying to make you sign this?”
Before Elena could answer, Jackson shouted from the hallway.
“Don’t say anything!”
