Chapter 7 - BUILDING AN EXIT
Elena stopped trying to save the marriage.
She began preparing to survive it.
She opened a new bank account at a different institution.
She changed every password.
She sent copies of the forged loan application and transfer papers to Nora.
She packed essential documents, medication, clothing, and her father’s photograph into a small suitcase.
The suitcase stayed in a storage locker near her office.
Elena also told her supervisor that she might need several days away without warning.
She did not explain why.
At home, she continued acting normally.
Jackson became unusually affectionate.
He cooked dinner.
He ordered the wine they had served at their wedding.
He spoke about vacations and children.
But every conversation eventually returned to Genesis.
“My mother is scared,” he said one night.
“She is scared of losing control.”
“She built that company from nothing.”
“My father helped save it.”
Jackson’s fork stopped halfway to his mouth.
“Who told you that?”
Elena immediately regretted revealing too much.
“Nora said there were old investments.”
Jackson placed his fork down.
“My mother paid Victor back years ago.”
“Then the audit will confirm it.”
“What audit?”
Elena did not answer.
Jackson rose so quickly his chair struck the wall.
“You need to stop digging into things you don’t understand.”
“I understand forged signatures.”
His expression became cold.
“You opened my mail.”
“You used my apartment on a loan application.”
“It would have benefited both of us.”
“You tried to steal from me.”
Jackson stepped closer.
Then he noticed Elena’s phone recording on the kitchen counter.
She had started a voice memo before confronting him.
Jackson grabbed the phone.
Elena moved toward the front door.
He deleted the recording, but he did not know it had automatically uploaded to cloud storage.
“Don’t ever record me again,” he warned.
Elena left the house and spent the night in a hotel.
The next morning, Genesis called.
Her voice was gentle.
“Come to dinner tomorrow. We will solve this as a family.”
Elena almost refused.
Then Nora explained that the dinner could establish whether Genesis and Jackson were knowingly attempting financial coercion.
“Do not place yourself in danger,” Nora said.
Elena promised she would leave the moment anyone became aggressive.
She believed a room full of witnesses would protect her.
