Chapter 6 - THE SAFE-DEPOSIT KEY

The key belonged to a safe-deposit box Victor had rented under a private trust.

Nora did not know what was inside.

Victor’s instructions required Elena to open it alone.

The box was held at a bank across town.

Elena scheduled an appointment for Friday morning.

She never made it inside.

When she left home, Jackson was waiting beside her car.

“Where are you going?”

“To the office.”

“You work from home on Fridays.”

“I have a client meeting.”

Jackson glanced toward her purse.

For a moment, Elena wondered whether he knew about the key.

Then he smiled.

“Let me drive you.”

“I’ll be late.”

“I said I’ll drive.”

His voice had changed.

Elena forced herself to remain calm.

Her phone rang.

Nora’s name appeared on the screen.

Jackson saw it.

He snatched the phone from Elena’s hand.

“Why is your father’s lawyer calling you again?”

“Give it back.”

“What are you hiding?”

Elena reached for the phone.

Jackson gripped her wrist.

Not hard enough to leave an obvious bruise.

Hard enough to make his meaning clear.

Then a neighbor opened her garage across the street.

Jackson released Elena immediately.

His smile returned.

“We’re both stressed,” he said softly. “Go to your meeting.”

Elena drove away without looking back.

She did not go to the bank.

She went to Nora’s office and placed the key in the attorney’s safe.

That evening, Jackson arrived home carrying flowers.

He apologized for grabbing her wrist.

He blamed pressure at work.

He cried.

Elena had seen his tears before.

This time, she noticed they stopped the moment she agreed not to leave.

Three days later, Genesis announced a formal family dinner.

She called it a reconciliation.

Everyone would attend.

Genesis said she wanted to end the conflict and restore peace.

Jackson told Elena she had no choice.

“You will come,” he said. “You will apologize, and you will sign the papers.”

Elena asked what would happen if she refused.

Jackson looked at her for a long time.

Then he said, “Don’t force me to choose between you and my mother.”

Elena finally understood.

May you like

He had already chosen.

👉 The family dinner was not a celebration—it was a deadline, and Genesis had prepared the entire room to pressure Elena into surrendering.
