Chapter 2 - SIX WEEKS EARLIER
Six weeks before the dinner, Elena still believed her marriage could be saved.
She and Jackson had been married for seven years.
To friends, they appeared successful.
Jackson worked as vice president of Reed Urban Development, the real estate company Genesis had built into one of Charlotte’s most recognizable family businesses.
Elena was a financial risk consultant who worked mostly from home.
She earned more than Jackson, but she never spoke about it publicly.
Jackson preferred people to believe he provided everything.
Elena allowed it because she had once mistaken his pride for insecurity.
Then her father died.
Victor Carter had been quiet, careful, and stubbornly private. He left Elena an Uptown apartment he had purchased years earlier, along with $420,000 in investment accounts.
The apartment was not a mansion.
But it was hers.
It was where she had lived after college.
It was where Victor had taught her how to read balance sheets at the kitchen table.
Three days after the funeral, Genesis visited Elena without calling.
She walked through the apartment as though she were inspecting a property she had already purchased.
“This place would be perfect for me,” she said.
Elena thought she was joking.
Genesis was not.
“My house is becoming too large. You and Jackson already live in a beautiful home. There is no reason for you to keep this apartment empty.”
“It isn’t empty,” Elena replied. “I work here sometimes. And it belonged to my father.”
Genesis smiled.
“That is sentimental thinking. Families survive by sharing assets.”
A week later, Jackson brought up the inheritance.
He said his mother needed $300,000 to stabilize a development project.
“It would only be temporary,” he promised.
Elena asked to see the company’s financial statements.
Jackson’s expression hardened.
“You don’t trust me?”
“I’m a financial consultant. I don’t invest hundreds of thousands of dollars without seeing records.”
Jackson stood and walked away.
That evening, Genesis called three relatives and told them Elena had refused to help save the family business.
Within days, Elena began receiving carefully worded messages.
Genesis sacrificed everything for Jackson.
