Chapter 14 - HER FATHER’S LAST WARNING
Elena opened the safe-deposit box with Nora beside her.
Inside was the duplicate ledger.
There were share certificates.
Loan agreements.
Bank records.
And a sealed letter with Elena’s name written in Victor’s familiar handwriting.
She opened the letter last.
My dearest Elena,
If you are reading this, then I was right to be cautious.
Victor explained that Genesis had approached him years earlier when Reed Urban Development was close to collapse.
He saved the company because hundreds of employees depended on it.
He did not trust Genesis enough to give her money without protection.
He accepted preferred shares and conversion rights.
Years later, when Elena introduced Jackson as her boyfriend, Victor had recognized the name.
He hired a private investigator.
At first, Victor found nothing conclusive.
Jackson appeared genuinely devoted to Elena.
But shortly before the wedding, Victor intercepted an email Genesis had sent to Jackson.
Keep her close. One day, everything Victor controls will pass through her.
Elena stopped reading.
Her chest tightened.
Nora offered to pause.
Elena shook her head.
She needed the whole truth.
Victor admitted he had wanted to warn her.
But Elena had been deeply in love.
Jackson had never asked her for money during their engagement.
Victor feared that accusing him without proof would drive Elena away.
Instead, he created legal safeguards.
His ownership rights could not be transferred without Elena’s independent attorney approving the transaction.
Any attempt to use coercion, forgery, or concealed debt would accelerate conversion of the shares.
At the end of the letter, Victor wrote:
I cannot tell you whether Jackson loved you. Only he knows that. But love that requires your silence, fear, or surrender is not love. Whatever happens, remember that you were never weak. You were simply loyal to someone who did not deserve it.
Elena pressed the letter to her chest and wept.
Not because the company might belong to her.
Because her father had known she might one day need permission to leave.
The duplicate ledger proved that Victor’s loans had never been repaid.
It also proved Genesis and Jackson had hidden the default.
Nora reviewed the conversion clause.
Then she looked at Elena.
“There is no uncertainty anymore.”
“What does that mean?”
“It means Victor’s shares converted the moment they forged your signature.”
Nora turned the final certificate toward her.
