Chapter 5 - MORE THAN AN APARTMENT

Nora’s office occupied the twentieth floor of a glass tower overlooking downtown Charlotte.
She locked the conference room door before placing a thin black file on the table.
“Your father first invested in Reed Urban Development during the recession,” she explained.
Genesis had been facing bankruptcy.
Victor provided emergency capital through a private agreement.
In exchange, he received preferred shares and the right to review the company’s financial records.
“How many shares?” Elena asked.
“The final number is still being verified.”
Nora would not reveal more until the audit was complete.
But she showed Elena one paragraph from Victor’s handwritten instructions.
If Reed Urban Development failed to repay specified loans, Victor’s preferred shares could convert into voting shares.
Elena read the sentence twice.
“Genesis’s company owed my father money?”
“A great deal of money.”
“How much?”
“We believe more than two million dollars.”
Elena felt the room tilt.
Genesis had spent years acting as though Victor were beneath her.
At family dinners, she had referred to him as a cautious little accountant.
She had never mentioned that he had once saved her company.
Nora opened another file.
Several payments were missing.
Company money had been transferred into accounts controlled by Genesis and Jackson.
The audit team suspected fraud, but they needed original records that Victor had stored elsewhere.
“What happens if the debt was never repaid?” Elena asked.
Nora chose her words carefully.
“Ownership could change.”
Elena thought of the forged deed.
The loan application.
The sudden urgency surrounding her inheritance.
“They need me to sign away my rights.”
“They may need more than that.”
Nora pointed to a paragraph buried in the quitclaim package Elena had photographed.
It was not merely a property transfer.
It also contained a release of any claims Elena might inherit against Genesis, Jackson, or Reed Urban Development.
Had Elena signed it, she would have surrendered the apartment, the $300,000, and any future ownership interest in the company.
Jackson had called it a tax form.
Nora leaned forward.
“Elena, they are not asking you for help. They are trying to erase you before you discover what your father left behind.”
Elena looked down at her wedding ring.

For the first time, she wondered whether Jackson had married her because he loved her—or because Genesis had known exactly who Victor Carter was.
👉 Nora placed a small brass key on the table and told Elena it opened the one place Jackson had been searching for.
