Chapter 13 - THE NIGHT JACKSON CAME BACK
Building security reviewed six months of footage.
Three weeks before the dinner, Jackson had entered Elena’s apartment at 2:14 a.m.
He used a key she did not know he possessed.
He carried an empty gym bag inside.
When he left forty minutes later, the bag was full.
Jackson had taken Victor’s red ledger.
Elena remembered that night.
Jackson had told her he was attending a late company meeting.
He came home after three in the morning and showered immediately.
The next day, he gave her flowers.
Detectives searched the home Elena had shared with him.
The ledger was not there.
Jackson refused to speak.
Genesis claimed she had never seen it.
Then Caleb remembered something.
After the assault, while everyone waited for police, Genesis had whispered to Jackson near the hallway.
“The book is safe.”
A microphone attached to a home security camera had captured part of the sentence.
Police obtained another warrant for Genesis’s mansion.
They searched the office, basement, attic, garage, and garden storage room.
No ledger.
But investigators found ashes in an outdoor fireplace.
Among them were fragments of red leather and several partially burned pages.
Genesis had tried to destroy the records after police left.
She had failed.
Forensic specialists recovered account numbers, dates, and Victor’s handwritten notes.
One line was still readable:
G.R. and J.R. knowingly diverted investor funds.
The initials matched Genesis Reed and Jackson Reed.
Genesis was arrested for evidence destruction and obstruction.
She was released on bond but ordered to surrender her passport.
Outside the courthouse, she faced cameras.
She called Elena vindictive.
She said the assault had been an unfortunate misunderstanding.
Elena watched the interview from Nora’s office.
For years, Genesis had controlled every room by deciding which version of reality everyone was permitted to believe.
Now documents were speaking for themselves.
Still, the recovered ledger was incomplete.
The most important pages had burned.
The final ownership calculation remained uncertain.
Then Nora received a call from Victor’s accountant.
Victor had anticipated someone might destroy the original.
He had created a certified duplicate.
It had been placed in the safe-deposit box.
