The account belonged to a shell company registered in Delaware.
Jackson was listed as manager.
Genesis was the authorized signer.
Over four years, Reed Urban Development had transferred nearly $1.6 million into it.
The money had paid for luxury vacations, private school tuition for relatives, jewelry, and renovations to Genesis’s mansion.
Company employees had been told there was no money for raises.
Investors had been shown false financial reports.
Victor had discovered some of the transfers before his death.
That was why he ordered the audit.
Elena now understood why Genesis wanted $300,000 immediately.
Payroll taxes were overdue.
A construction loan was in default.
The company was days away from exposing its true condition.
Genesis’s attorney tried to negotiate.
She offered Elena the apartment, the investment accounts, and a private apology.
Elena refused.
“They keep offering me things that already belong to me.”
The financial crimes division obtained a warrant.
Investigators searched Genesis’s office.

Jackson now faced potential identity theft and attempted fraud charges in addition to assault.
Genesis continued insisting she knew nothing.

The concierge refused to let her upstairs.

Elena and Nora returned to the apartment with a private security officer.
They searched Victor’s desk.
The drawers were empty.
Then Elena noticed scratches beneath the bottom panel.
A false compartment had been forced open.
