Chapter 7 - THE BOARD MEETING CLAIRE WAS NOT SUPPOSED TO ATTEND

Daniel scheduled an emergency board meeting while Claire was visiting the original restaurant.

The notice claimed the company faced an immediate liquidity crisis.

He requested temporary executive authority and approval to negotiate with Alder Peak.

Claire received no invitation.

Mara did.

An independent director forwarded the notice after noticing Claire’s name had been removed from the distribution list.

Claire entered the meeting unexpectedly.

Daniel was standing beside Vanessa when she appeared.

His presentation showed fake losses.

Inflated vendor obligations.

Cash shortages created by the money they had stolen.

Daniel described Claire as “temporarily unavailable due to personal difficulties.”

“I’m available,” Claire said.

Silence filled the room.

Vanessa recovered first.

“This meeting may be stressful for you.”

Claire placed verified bank records on the table.

“What may be stressful is explaining why your logistics company received almost three million dollars without delivering anything.”

Daniel did not panic.

He smiled.

“You’ve misunderstood preliminary accounts.”

Claire asked the directors to delay all action pending an independent audit.

The board agreed.

Daniel waited until they returned home to react.

He accused her of humiliating him.

“You walked into that room like I was a criminal.”

“You are stealing.”

“I built their confidence in this company.”

“You built confidence in yourself.”

Daniel pushed her against the hallway wall.

He stopped when the security camera’s indicator flashed.

Then he pulled the device from its mount.

Claire did not tell him about the backup.

That night, he and Gloria discussed a new plan.

The family would gather for Sunday dinner.

Gloria would present Claire with a “marital reconciliation agreement.”

The document gave Daniel temporary management power over Claire’s shares.

If Claire refused, relatives would witness her supposed emotional breakdown.

Vanessa would attend as a business adviser.

Daniel intended to record the confrontation selectively.

Gloria believed family pressure would make Claire obey.

“She cannot tolerate everyone disapproving of her,” Gloria said.

Daniel answered:

“She’ll sign before dessert.”

Claire heard the conversation through the encrypted kitchen microphone.

She called Mara.

“Let them have the dinner.”

Mara hesitated.

“Claire, this could become dangerous.”

“It already is.”

Together with Morales, they designed a controlled evidence operation.

Officers would wait in the service corridor.

The cameras would transmit live.

Claire would not confront Daniel until police were positioned.

Mara asked what signal she would use.

Claire looked toward the large silver serving tray Gloria displayed only during important family dinners.

“When I lift the lid,” she said, “bring everyone in.”

👉 The family believed Sunday dinner would force Claire to surrender, while Claire planned to serve every secret they had hidden from one another.
