Chapter 5 - THE MONEY BEHIND THE RED DOOR

Claire opened the company accounts from a laptop Daniel did not know she owned.

Nadia had included a secure link to archived statements.

Over eighteen months, Morgan Table Foods paid Vantage Route Partners $2.8 million.

The invoices described emergency freight, refrigerated storage and regional distribution.

None of those services existed.

Payments moved from Vantage into three separate accounts.

One belonged to a luxury property company controlled by Gloria.

One paid Vanessa’s apartment and travel expenses.

The third funded Daniel’s private investment account.

Claire felt physically ill.

She searched deeper.

Daniel had also charged personal expenses to the company.

Jewelry.

Hotel suites.

A sports car registered through a shell corporation.

A private dining club membership shared with Vanessa.

The red lingerie later placed on the silver tray had been purchased using the Morgan Table Foods executive account.

Claire did not confront him.

She called Nadia from a public phone.

“Is this everything?”

“No.”

Nadia explained that Daniel and Vanessa had created false debt.

They used fake vendor balances to make the company appear unstable.

Then Daniel approached a private equity firm called Alder Peak Partners.

He offered them a controlling position if they helped remove Claire as chief executive.

“How can he remove me? I own sixty-four percent.”

“They’re preparing to challenge your competence.”

Claire stopped breathing.

Nadia had seen draft board minutes describing Claire as emotionally volatile.

The documents claimed she disrupted meetings, forgot financial details and threatened employees.

None of it was true.

Vanessa had also commissioned a private medical report based on statements supplied by Daniel.

The report suggested Claire suffered from untreated depression and stress-related cognitive impairment.

Claire had never met the doctor.

“They want temporary board authority,” Nadia said. “Once they obtain it, they’ll issue new shares and dilute your ownership.”

“Can they do that?”

“Not legally.”

“But?”

“They don’t need the lie to survive forever. They need it to survive long enough to close the deal.”

Claire remembered Daniel encouraging her to miss board meetings.

He said she worked too hard.

He offered to manage difficult executives.

Every absence was being rewritten as incapacity.

She contacted Mara Bennett, the attorney who had incorporated Morgan Table Foods.

Mara instructed her not to access the company network again.

“Daniel may be monitoring activity.”

“He’s stealing from me.”

“He’s stealing from the company. That gives us more options.”

Mara brought in Detective Luis Morales, who specialized in financial crimes.

They began quietly preserving records.

Then Morales asked whether Daniel had ever become violent.

Claire answered too quickly.

“No.”

Mara looked at the fading mark around Claire’s wrist.

👉 Claire was ready to expose the financial fraud, but admitting the violence inside her home would require confronting the lie she still told herself.
