Chapter 16 - THE TABLE WHERE PEOPLE COULD SPEAK
Claire converted the house into the Morgan Center for Economic Safety.
It provided temporary housing and legal assistance for people experiencing domestic and financial abuse.
The living room became a counseling area.
Daniel’s office became a forensic-document lab.
The kitchen offered professional training for residents rebuilding careers.
Claire kept the dining room largely unchanged.
The chandelier remained.
So did the long table.
But the chairs were arranged in a circle during weekly meetings.
No one sat permanently at the head.
The silver tray was displayed behind glass with replicas of the evidence.
A small plaque read:
He expected obedience to return from the kitchen. She returned with proof.
Claire debated whether that wording made the night sound triumphant.
The slap had not been empowering.

She added another sentence:

Specialists helped survivors identify shell companies, hidden debt, forged signatures and business ownership manipulation.
Olivia Grant, a chef who once left an abusive marriage with no access to her own restaurant accounts, became director of the training kitchen.
Residents prepared meals together.
No one was ordered to serve the person harming them.
Morgan Table Foods funded the center but did not control client decisions.
Claire insisted on an independent board.
She had learned that good intentions did not eliminate the need for safeguards.
During the opening dinner, Nadia, Sophie, Mara and Detective Morales sat beside former employees and residents.
Claire carried a serving tray from the kitchen.
Several people became quiet.
Then she lifted the lid.
Bowls of noodles appeared.

The room laughed with relief.
Claire served herself first.
