Chapter 13 - THE MOTHER WHO TAUGHT HIM ENTITLEMENT
The oldest message came from the week after Claire and Daniel became engaged.
Gloria wrote:
Do not let her keep business matters separate after marriage. A wife who controls money controls the husband.
Daniel replied:
She is careful because employees depend on her.
Gloria:
Then make yourself the person she depends on.
Over the years, Gloria advised Daniel repeatedly.
Isolate Claire from attorneys loyal to her parents.
Take over public appearances.
Encourage her to stay in the kitchen during family events.
Describe business success as a joint achievement and every refusal as selfishness.
Gloria did not create Daniel’s violence.
She normalized his entitlement.
When he complained that Claire would not give him stock, Gloria responded:
A husband should not have to ask permission inside his own family.
She arranged family dinners where relatives praised Daniel and diminished Claire.
She told Vanessa that Claire was “useful but unsuited for power.”
She accepted money from shell companies.
She introduced Daniel to the notary who falsified the stock agreement.
Her role was not ceremonial.
It was operational.
Gloria eventually accepted a plea agreement.
She admitted conspiracy, receipt of stolen funds and participation in the false incapacity strategy.
She surrendered the lake property.
She agreed to testify against Daniel and Vanessa.
At her plea hearing, she described the slap as the moment she realized the plan had gone too far.
Claire’s attorney corrected the record.
The plan had already included fraud, coercion and theft.
Violence did not transform an innocent strategy into a crime.
It exposed the violence already inside it.
Clara also entered a plea for filing false invoices.
She returned funds and cooperated.
Other relatives were cleared after proving they received gifts without knowing the source.
Several apologized to Claire.
She accepted no apology that began with:
We were only trying to keep peace.
Peace had always meant Claire remained quiet while Daniel received what he wanted.
The criminal trial for Daniel and Vanessa was scheduled for spring.
Daniel’s attorney planned to portray Claire as a vindictive wife using corporate power to punish adultery.
Claire knew the affair photographs would attract attention.
She also knew the affair was not the central crime.
