Chapter 14 - CLAIRE TAKES THE STAND
Daniel watched Claire walk toward the witness stand.
The bruise was gone.
A faint mark remained near her lip.
The prosecutor began with Morgan’s Kitchen.
Claire described her mother’s recipes.
The first freezer truck.
The employees who helped pack meals overnight.
Then she explained the ownership structure.
Daniel’s salary.
His board role.
The equity package he rejected.
The distinction between a spouse and a shareholder.
Daniel’s attorney tried to blur it.
“You referred to Morgan Table Foods as ‘our company’ during interviews.”
“Sometimes.”
“Did you consider your husband a partner?”
“In marriage.”
“And business?”
“He was an executive employee and director.”
The attorney displayed photographs of Claire cooking for the Reeves family.
“You embraced a traditional family role.”
“I cooked because I enjoyed it.”
“Your husband managed corporate strategy.”
“He managed part of it.”
“Until you became suspicious of his relationship with Vanessa.”
Claire looked toward the jury.
“I became suspicious because eleven million dollars disappeared.”
The courtroom became quiet.
The prosecutor played the kitchen footage.
Daniel demanding noodles.
Claire refusing to sign.
The slap.
Gloria’s instruction that Claire obey.
Vanessa’s silence.
The defense argued that one violent incident did not prove a financial conspiracy.
The prosecutor played Daniel’s recording.
If she refuses at dinner, the scene becomes evidence for the incapacity petition.
Daniel had planned to use Claire’s reaction.
The violence and fraud were not separate.
Each supported the other.

Sophie authenticated the invoices and affair evidence.
The notary admitted falsifying the stock transfer.
Gloria testified against her son.
Daniel’s attorney attacked her credibility as a mother seeking leniency.
Gloria answered:
“I taught him that Claire’s success should become his. He chose how far to take that lesson.”
Vanessa testified next.
She blamed Daniel for the assault and Gloria for the family pressure.
Then prosecutors displayed her messages to Alder Peak and the offshore account.
Every person who tried to shift responsibility carried documents proving independent choices.
Daniel chose not to testify.
The jury convicted him of domestic assault, conspiracy, embezzlement, forgery, identity fraud and securities-related offenses.
Vanessa was convicted of conspiracy, embezzlement, forgery and obstruction.
