Chapter 4 - VANESSA ENTERS THE COMPANY
Vanessa was introduced as a restructuring consultant.
She had worked for several private equity firms and specialized in preparing family-owned businesses for investment.
Daniel claimed Morgan Table Foods needed her expertise before entering new markets.
Claire reviewed Vanessa’s résumé.
It looked impressive.
Several former clients had been sold soon after she joined them, but Daniel described those sales as successes.
Vanessa began attending executive meetings.
She questioned Claire’s cautious expansion strategy.
She recommended borrowing heavily to purchase smaller competitors.
When Claire resisted, Vanessa suggested she lacked the emotional discipline required to lead a rapidly growing company.
“You built something beautiful,” Vanessa said. “Daniel can help turn it into something powerful.”
Claire noticed the division.
Beautiful belonged to the woman who cooked.
Powerful belonged to the man who financed.
Daniel began staying late with Vanessa.
They traveled together.
Shared private dinners with investors.
When Claire asked why she had not been invited, Daniel accused her of jealousy.
“You said you hated networking events.”
“I hate being excluded from decisions about my company.”
“Then stop acting threatened by every capable woman.”
Vanessa became increasingly comfortable inside Claire’s life.
She attended family dinners.
Sat beside Gloria.
Received expensive birthday gifts from Daniel’s relatives.
Gloria praised her sophistication.
“She understands what executive life requires.”
Claire understood the comparison.
Vanessa wore red suits and discussed acquisitions.
Claire wore flour on Fridays while helping in the original restaurant kitchen.
Daniel used that contrast to diminish her.
“You still think like a restaurant owner,” he said during one argument.
“I am a restaurant owner.”
“You run a sixty-million-dollar corporation.”
“I built it by understanding the restaurant.”
He rolled his eyes.
The affair began during a conference in New York.
Daniel and Vanessa believed no one saw them enter the same hotel suite.
A junior marketing employee named Sophie did.
She said nothing because Daniel controlled promotions and bonuses.
Months later, Sophie noticed fake invoices from a logistics company called Vantage Route Partners.
Vanessa approved them.
Daniel signed the payments.
The company had no trucks, warehouse or employees.
Its registered address belonged to Gloria’s accountant.
Sophie copied the invoices before they disappeared from the system.
She did not yet know who she could trust.
Then Daniel ordered the termination of an accountant who questioned the same payments.
The accountant’s name was Nadia Chen.
Before leaving, Nadia sent Claire one message:

Please review every payment approved jointly by Daniel and Vanessa. Do not use your company computer.
