Chapter 12 - VANESSA’S INSURANCE POLICY

Vanessa offered prosecutors cooperation.
She claimed Daniel controlled the affair and financial scheme.
In exchange for reduced charges, she produced a stock-transfer agreement bearing Claire’s signature.
The document transferred twenty percent of Claire’s shares to Daniel one year earlier.
If valid, Claire no longer held the supermajority needed for certain board actions.
Daniel could argue some of his decisions had been authorized as a shareholder.
Claire had never seen the agreement.
The signature resembled hers perfectly.
The notary was legitimate.
The date corresponded with a charity event Claire attended with Daniel.
Vanessa claimed Claire signed after drinking heavily.
Daniel’s attorney called it a marital gift.
Mara examined the paper.
The notary’s journal showed Claire had appeared.
Security video from the event showed her entering the private office.
For several hours, the document seemed dangerous.
Then Nadia noticed the share certificate numbers.
The agreement referenced certificates that did not exist on the signing date.
They were issued three months later during an internal reorganization.
The transfer had been created afterward and backdated.
The notary admitted Daniel paid him to add the entry retroactively.
He believed Claire had agreed privately.
The signature came from a high-resolution scan stored in the executive system.
Vanessa had accessed the file.
Her cooperation offer collapsed.
Investigators also recovered messages showing she planned to remove Daniel after Claire’s shares were diluted.
Alder Peak promised Vanessa the chief executive position.
Daniel would receive his payout, then be blamed publicly for the fraud.
Vanessa had been using the affair to control him.
That did not make Daniel a victim of Claire.
It made him another conspirator who believed he could betray everyone first.
When Daniel learned of Vanessa’s private agreement, he provided prosecutors with access to her offshore account.
They began destroying one another’s defenses.
Gloria watched the collapse from pretrial detention.
She requested a meeting with Claire.
Mara advised against it.
Claire agreed under monitored conditions.
Gloria entered the room without jewelry or makeup.
“I did not know he would hit you,” she began.
Claire answered:
“You watched him.”
Gloria started crying.
“I thought he only needed authority.”
“You helped call me unstable.”
“I was protecting my son.”
“You were protecting the version of him that made you feel powerful.”

Gloria had no response.
👉 Gloria claimed she had only followed Daniel’s plan, but Claire possessed years of messages showing the mother had taught him to view marriage as ownership.
