Chapter 6 - THE FIRST SLAP

The first slap happened six months before the family dinner.
Claire found a photograph of Daniel and Vanessa kissing in a private club.
She placed it on the kitchen counter.
Daniel returned after midnight.
He looked at the photograph for several seconds.
Then he asked:
“Who gave you this?”
Claire had expected denial.
The absence of it hurt more.
“How long?”
“That photo proves nothing.”
“How long, Daniel?”
He accused Sophie of stalking him.
Then accused Claire of neglecting the marriage.
“You care more about that company than your husband.”
“You’re sleeping with a consultant I pay.”
“You stopped being a wife years ago.”
Claire told him to leave.
Daniel laughed.
“This is my home.”
“The deed is in my name.”
His expression changed.
He slapped her once.
The sound seemed louder than the impact.
Daniel immediately stepped backward.
Claire touched her cheek.
Neither spoke.
Then he began crying.
He said he had never done anything like that.
He blamed exhaustion.
Pressure.
The shame of being treated like an outsider in the company he helped build.
Claire locked herself in the bathroom.
Daniel remained outside apologizing for hours.
The next morning, Gloria arrived with flowers.
Daniel had already called her.
Gloria hugged Claire and said:
“Marriage sometimes brings out terrible reactions in good people.”
Claire stared at her.
“He hit me.”
“And he is devastated.”
Gloria urged secrecy.
A public accusation would destroy Daniel’s career.
It would damage Morgan Table Foods.
Employees might lose faith in leadership.
Claire allowed those arguments to work because they sounded practical.
Daniel attended two counseling sessions.
Then stopped.
The violence did not disappear.
He blocked doors.
Threw objects.
Twisted Claire’s arm when she reached for his phone.
Each incident remained just below the level she believed justified police.
Meanwhile, Daniel’s manufactured record described her as the aggressive spouse.
He photographed a broken plate without showing that he had thrown it.
He saved messages where Claire called him a liar but deleted his threats.
Vanessa began attending Gloria’s family dinners openly.
She smiled at Claire across the table as though the affair itself were a private victory.
One evening, Vanessa whispered:
“You should be grateful he still comes home.”
Claire said nothing.
But she had already installed a secure backup to the kitchen and dining-room cameras.
Daniel believed he controlled the household system.
May you like
He did not know Claire’s security contractor had created an independent encrypted account for her.
👉 Daniel believed every violent moment disappeared when the argument ended, unaware that the house had begun preserving what Claire was still afraid to say aloud.
