Chapter 9 - The Dinner Invitation
Rebecca announced the dinner as a reconciliation.
She selected one of the most prestigious restaurants in the city.
Private dining rooms were available.
She deliberately chose the main dining floor.
“Public places encourage civilized behavior,” she told Maya.
Maya understood the real purpose.
Rebecca believed Maya would not resist in front of wealthy guests.
David believed Elena would protect her reputation by calming everyone.
The dinner would include one final document.
A retroactive consent agreement confirming Maya had voluntarily guaranteed the company loan.
If Maya signed, the original fraud would become much harder to prove.
If she refused, David planned to pressure Elena into convincing her.
Rebecca personally invited Elena.
“We should settle this privately as mothers,” she said.
Elena accepted.
After the call, she contacted Maya’s attorney and the domestic violence detective assigned to review the recordings.
The evidence of financial fraud was strong.
The evidence of assault was more difficult.
Photographs existed.
Medical documentation did not.
David had always hurt Maya inside private spaces.
Rebecca repeatedly described each injury as an accident.
The detective explained that an arrest required either immediate evidence, a clear witness, a recording or probable cause supported by recent injuries.
Elena asked, “What if he becomes violent at dinner?”
“Call immediately. Do not warn him that officers are already nearby.”
The restaurant manager was contacted through the attorney.
He reviewed the situation and agreed to preserve all security footage.
He moved the dinner table beneath two cameras.
He assigned a waiter trained in emergency response.
He placed security near the side exit.
Elena hated the plan.
It required allowing Maya to enter a room with David.
But Maya refused to leave before obtaining the original consent document.
“I need the paper,” she told her mother during a secret call.
“The bank may take the house without it.”
“Let the attorney handle that.”
“The original has Rebecca’s handwritten notes. It proves she knew.”
Elena closed her eyes.
“You are not staying at that table if he touches you.”
“I won’t.”
“Use the phrase.”
“I will.”
They agreed on a second signal.
If Maya placed her champagne napkin beneath her plate, Elena would call the police immediately.
No argument.
No warning.
No attempt to preserve the dinner.
The evening arrived.
Maya dressed carefully, hiding a fresh bruise beneath her sleeve.
Before leaving the house, David told her, “Tonight you will act like a wife who understands what she owes.”
Maya looked at him in the mirror.
“Tonight everyone will understand.”
