Chapter 4 - The First Time He Pulled Her Hair

The first time David pulled Maya’s hair, they were alone.

It happened in the kitchen after a charity dinner.

Maya had corrected him in front of another couple when he claimed her design firm belonged to the family company.

“It doesn’t,” she said gently. “I founded it before we married.”

David smiled through dinner.

At home, the smile disappeared.

“You made me look dishonest.”

“You said something untrue.”

“You could have corrected me privately.”

“You could have asked before claiming my company.”

Maya turned toward the stairs.

David grabbed the back of her hair.

The movement was fast.

Her head snapped backward.

For one second, she could not breathe.

David released her immediately.

Shock passed across his face.

Then shame.

“I didn’t mean to do that.”

Maya touched her scalp.

“You grabbed me.”

“You walked away while I was speaking.”

“That does not matter.”

“I know.”

He apologized repeatedly.

He blamed wine.

Pressure.

His father’s expectations.

He slept in the guest room and sent flowers to Maya’s office.

Two days later, Rebecca arrived.

Maya had not told her.

David had.

Rebecca sat across from Maya and lowered her voice.

“A man under pressure sometimes reacts badly.”

“He pulled my hair.”

“And apologized.”

“You’re defending him.”

“I am protecting your marriage.”

Maya stared at her.

Rebecca reached across the table.

“If you tell Elena, she will turn one mistake into a family war.”

Maya thought of her argument with her mother.

She imagined Elena calling attorneys.

Police.

Relatives.

She imagined the humiliation of explaining that the successful marriage everyone admired had already become dangerous.

So Maya told no one.

David became loving again.

For several weeks, he treated her carefully.

Then he blocked a doorway during an argument.

Later, he gripped her wrist.

After that, he shoved her against a wall.

Each incident was followed by regret.

Each apology became shorter.

Rebecca always appeared afterward with the same message.

Good wives calm situations.

Good wives do not expose family weakness.

Good wives understand that reputation protects everyone.

Maya began photographing marks on her skin.

She stored the images inside a hidden email draft.

She was not yet ready to leave.

But some part of her had stopped believing the incidents were accidents.

One evening, David discovered her looking at the photographs.

He took her phone.

“What are these for?”

Maya’s blood ran cold.

👉 David deleted the pictures in front of her, unaware that the hidden email had already copied them somewhere he could not reach.
